The 2005 ESH calendar
is called The Illumination Calendar, and as usual the
offbeat artist has created an insightful and incisive glimpse into
the local psyche via his stark black-and-white images. Crafted in
a playful pen-and-ink style that makes innovative use of empty space
to fill out the forms, creator Eric Hawkes has once again fulfilled
the Taoist maxim that its the empty space that makes the cup
useful.
The 12 months in the calendar depict scenes of whimsy and wistfulness,
playfulness and a breezy nonchalance. January features a rock and
roll band of snowmen created by a perky neighborhood kid, complete
with bass, drums, and guitar. February displays the staring face of
a fluffy sheep, while March depicts a stark rotary telephone, suggesting
the desperation for human contact the break up the late-winter doldrums.
Mr. Hawkes demonstrates an aesthetic appreciation for the female form,
from the etched image of a girls coy face in April to the smiling
Red Sox fan gracing May. The artists visual flair is unleashed
in July, as a vivid sky and festive aura is revealed behind a flashlight-toting
woman. The image is a testament to the remarkable amount of depth
and dynamics Mr. Hawkes can evoke from a simple 2-dimensional black-and-white
image.
Septembers image of an empty rowboat in the dunes in front of
a placid ocean evokes the quiet reverie of lingering Indian summer
days. October features a pack of cellphone toting trick-or-treaters
using wireless technology to relay the best trick or treating locales.
The calendar ends with Decembers image of a face hidden in a
twirling Christmas ornament. The notes page at the end
features a man with a microphone in his hands, perhaps a subtle allusion
to Mr. Hawkes alter ego as a karaoke MC at Seasons.
With the 2005 ESH calendar, Mr. Hawkes continues his winning streak
of crafting playful, evocative images that seem both novel and familiar
at the same time. The 12 images make fitting companions for another
year. |
