EDGARTOWN
January 13, 2005

By Gail Craig - 508-627-3754 - gail@vineyard.net

I have just returned to the Island from a very successful party at my cousin’s, Joan (Kelley) McCready’s, house in Braintree. Normally it is a Christmas party, but it was postponed and changed to a “Thank Goodness Its Not 2004 Anymore” party. Fellow Edgartown cousin, Joanne Ryan, her husband, Kevin, and son, Jonathan, and mom, Jean O’Brien, also ventured to the mainland for the party, an annual event that includes all the relatives on my dad’s side of the family. All four of my Aunt Dot Kelley’s kids — Kathy, Nancy, Bob (Butch) and Joan — were there, as well as my Uncle Dick Gardner’s sons, Rich and Bill, my Aunt Jean and her daughters, Joanne and Carol, and my sister and myself. And of course, all of our children, spouses, and grandchildren were there as well so it was a wild day. I don’t think Joan’s house could have held many more people, but it was great fun to see each other and catch up and have the next generation of kids play together and get to know one another.

Congratulations to Pia and Kevin Gundersen and big brothers, Jacob and Eli, on the arrival of daughter and sister, Ingrid Sarah, who was born on Jan. 5, weighing 8 lbs. 11 oz. Although somewhat sleep-deprived, everyone is happy and healthy. Pia reports that Jacob was a bit surprised at Ingrid’s lack of interest in a hot dog for dinner the other night, but other than that, she appears to be acceptable.

Leo and Alison Convery report having a great Christmas. Their daughter, Susan Foltz, her husband, Rob, and sons, Daniel and Jack, visited from Ft. Lauderdale for Christmas week. The boys had never seen snow before and delighted in their first snowstorm. They were especially impressed by the many icicles and stored a collection in the freezer. As sleds were not readily available, plastic laundry baskets made excellent makeshift ones. Island cousins, Mattie and Makenzie Luce, took turns sledding and wore out their fathers with cries of “do it again, Dad.” The Converys’ other daughter, Betsi Luce and her family joined in the fun with Alex, Brian, Mathew, and Makenzie. Betsi hosted the annual gingerbread house construction party with all the grandkids in attendance. Debbie and Warren Gaines, along with their two children, Michaella and Daniel, joined in the fun as well. Betsi also hosted the annual Christmas Eve party for the family, including her husband’s, Mark's, family, Preston and Geri Averill, and his sister, Becky, who was visiting with her son Aa. Leo Convery Jr., wife, Deneen, and son, Leo III, visited Deneen’s family in New Orleans. Daughter Rachael, who lives and works with Wendy Gibson in the area, also joined in the festivities. Leo and Alison are off shortly to visit Susan in Ft. Lauderdale and will stop to visit Terry and Midge Simonds, who are now living in Edenton, North Carolina.

Adam Joyce turned 21 on Jan 5 and is living in Vail Colo., where he studies snowboarding in the winter and fly-fishing in the summer. He was happy to have spent Christmas on the mountain with his parents, Jim and Jane, and brothers, James and Patrick. It was their first Christmas together in three years.

Get well wishes go out to Helen Gibson, who has returned to the Island following a heart attack. She is feeling quite well and will be back on her feet in no time.

Cathie Belcher has put together a wonderful display at the Edgartown Public library with suggestions if you are planning a trip to Walt Disney World. There are pictures and toys and pamphlets in the front entry with ideas on how to make the trip easier and more enjoyable. f you’re headed to Disney, you might want to take a look at the exhibit. If nothing else, kids might enjoy looking at the pictures and toys.

Don’t forget the special town meeting tonight at 7:30 pm at the Old Whaling Church. The primary topic will be access to the proposed affordable housing. If you want your vote to count, it’s important to attend. Remember the old adage, if you don’t vote, you forfeit your right to complain.

Have a wonderful week and don’t forget to send me your news.
