OAK BLUFFS
January 13, 2005

By Megan Alley - 508-693-0850 - meganislandmegan@verizon.net

Now the scenery from the back windows into the woods gives the impression of observing stills from a black and white movie. The only colors in sight are those worn by humans, as even the birds have mostly faded to dull grays and browns. The crows hover like vultures on the tree limbs waiting for the suet feeder to be filled in hopes I will not notice their thievery and scare them away before they complete their meal.

Even activity on the streets has slowed down, but underlining all this quiet, many events are still being planned for numerous activities that could keep you occupied throughout the winter. The first of these is a seminar on new notary rules and regulations, which will be presented by the Nathan Mayhew Seminars and the National Notary Association. The training seminar will be held at the Nathan Mayhew Seminars’ Hough Library on Sat., Jan. 15, from 9 am to 4 pm. For information please call Dean Al Daniels at 693-6603.

Cheryll Sashin is already making plans to attend the Fresh Air Conference at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square in February. It is not too soon to be thinking about taking in a fresh-air child next summer. Cheryll will up-date us on the conference when she returns and have more information for anyone interested.

Congratulations to all those Oak Bluffs students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who made the Honors list at the school. The names are too numerous to list here, but you all should be very proud of your accomplishments.

The PTO was pleased to announce that it received a check from Box Tops for Education in the amount of $343.85. Thanks to everyone who clipped those coupons. The PTO will still continue to collect them, so keep on cutting!

For sixth graders only there will be a canteen in the gym on Jan. 14 from 7 to 9:30 pm. There will be games and dancing for a $2 admission fee.

Word has it that the breakfasts every Tuesday morning at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center are the best bargain in town. The breakfasts are held from 8 to 9:30 am, and for $3.50 you will be served, eggs, bacon, and all the works. Richard and Dawn Combra sponsored one of the breakfasts last month, and anyone interested in being a sponsor may contact Rose at the Center. Seniors are also encouraged to come by the Center anytime to welcome the new director, Roger Wey.

James Rebello returned home to visit with his mother, Lynn Rebello, and sister Ashley and brother Joel after a brief vacation in Florida. James will be here for a few weeks during the winter break from Springfield College, where he is a freshman.

Kay Manning reports she was most surprised Sunday morning past when she and Joe Nunes spotted not one but a flock of at least 14 robins in the yard. At one point something scared them off, but they soon returned to scour the yard for a tasty treat. Perhaps this will be a short winter.

Don’t forget the special town meeting that will be held at the Oak Bluffs School gym on Tues., Jan. 18. There are several articles of interest that voters should be aware of. This is the start of the “political season” here on the Island.

Send your news my way and enjoy your week.
