Choreographer’s showcase

The Vineyard Dance Choreographers’ Workshop Performance features dances by Island choreographers. This year’s performance will be at the Vineyard Playhouse on Jan. 20, 21 & 22 at 7:30 pm, and Jan. 23 at 2:30 pm.

Choreographers and dancers include Juliana Abrams, Wiet Bacheller, Sandy Broyard, Sally Cohn, Kathy Joyce Costanza, Sioux Eagle, Clare Ives. Michelle Pikor, Peggy Koski Schwier, and Cathy Weiss. The performance incorporates modern dance, ballet, jazz, mime, and improvisation.

Reservation only tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors and children) and are available by calling 508-693-0479.

Essay contest

The Martha’s Vineyard branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History is sponsoring an essay contest for Island students in grades 9–12.

Contestants can write on one of nine historical topics, and the deadline for submissions is March 31. Winning students will be invited to present their essays at the branch’s annual summer program in August.

Island crafters have new home

The Martha’s Vineyard Craft Cooperative has moved from the Woodland Business Center. You will find them in the Union Street Mall in Vineyard Haven.

New artists have joined the cooperative, and you will still find many of your favorites at the Union Street Mall location. The store will open on Friday, Jan. 14 at 10 am.

Poetry reading

There will be an open-mike poetry night this Wednesday at the Park Corner Bistro, starting at 9. Sign up at the door and read your own work or a favorite poem by another. Adult and teen poets can read, and acoustic accompaniment is welcome.

The evening is hosted by Linda Black. No cover charge. Call 508-314-2421 for more information.

Inauguration Day demo planned

The Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) will hold a Counter- Inaugural Demonstration at Five Corners in Vineyard Haven next Thursday, Jan. 20, 2 to 4 pm. The group invites peaceful, progressive participants, and suggests black attire. For information call 508-627-8536.

Pick a book

The Vineyard Haven Public Library will introduce young readers to candidates for the 2005 One Book, One Island selection Tuesday, Jan. 18, 6:30 pm. Adults and young readers can vote for their favorites at all libraries and bookshops until Jan. 26.
