Congratulations to Priscilla Thifault and Elizabeth (Betty) Searle. They have a new great- granddaughter. Emma Lynne Putnam was born to Heidi Searle and Ryan Putnam in Brandon, Vt., on Dec. 18. Her big sister Michelle welcomed Emma, age three. Their maternal grandparents are Madeline Habekost Denis of Leicester, Vt., and Gerald Searle of Martha's Vineyard. Their paternal grandparents are Jane and Ed Browe of Florence, Vt. The other great- grandparents are William Habekost of Pottstown, Pa., and the late Leland (Buddy) Searle, as well as Wilbur and Audrey Putnam of Bridgewater, Vt.

I never recognized that the driver of a truck needed a skill similar to a quilter threading a needle. Watching the driver back a huge yacht balanced on a trailer into the Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard last week made me appreciate the skills needed to do this. Traffic was delayed only a minimal amount of time. All the drivers seemed to be admiring the dexterity with which the truck driver moved this delicate monster into place.

Then I began to notice many other skillful workers keeping things moving smoothly. After the snowstorm the UPS driver had to back all the way out of our road after delivering late Christmas gifts. The big ruts in the road hardly gave him pause. Our plumber knows just what to do and how to do it the most efficiently — when we are waiting for water, we appreciate him all the more. The SSA brings us off-Island and back home again, safely and securely.

We never think much about admiring these jobs well done. We see them all the time and expect that is how it will be. Only when something gives us pause do we think about what it takes to get these jobs done. To all of you who are doing your work well every day, I salute you. You are the ones who keep our world running smoothly.

Find out more about what makes the world go round: Mary Jane Carpenter will be at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore a week from Friday to reveal the kind of historical information you can find at the Dukes County Courthouse. Then the following week Demaris Wehr will tell you about efforts to bring peace and healing to the people of Bosnia.

Belated birthday greetings go out to Allyson Wajda who turned 14 last Saturday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Bob Reinhart, Allan Davey Sr., and Donna Paulson. Tomorrow wish the best to Tyler Paulson and Harry B. Jones.

Monday is a special day for Chuck Downing and the Rev. Francis Sayre. Wish the best on Tuesday to Steve Soriano. Patricia Neal celebrates next Thursday. Friday, Jan. 21, belongs to Cathy Deese and Anne Downing. Joy Stuart Bergstrom parties on Jan. 22, and Kevin Hammond on Jan. 24.

Heard on Main Street: Martin Luther King Jr., said it. “Life's most urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”
