The Vineyard
Calendar 2005, by Peter Simon. Published by Simon Press. $15.95.
Every Vineyard calendar has its own charm, but for sheer, lush, gorgeousness
Peter Simons cant be beat. As he has for many years, this
accomplished photographer has wrapped up the months ahead in a package
of views from all across the Island, each more compelling than the
next.
As year-round Vineyard residents, we can often become a little
bored by the pristine meadows and picturesque beaches we pass in our
daily round. But Peter Simons shots make even the most jaded
Islander grateful once more to live here.
Whether it is a view of Squibnocket surf breaking in the distance
beyond snowy Vineyard hills, a bank of wild roses at the edge of Ozzie
Fishers farm, or crisp autumn leaves spun by the wind along
a stone wall, Mr. Simon captures the very taste, feel, and smell of
each Island season.
My favorite is a view of marshes at Cow Bay outside Edgartown. It
is just dusk, a moment when the sky is still iridescent blue, low
clouds glowing with the last sun rays, wispy high clouds lavender
gray, all reflected in the water, the land already dark. The scene
evokes the very essence of Vineyard April, the air still chilly but
imbued with the promising lightness of early spring.
As usual, each photo is enhanced by brief commentary by a Vineyard
neighbor, many of whose names will be familiar.
Hurray, Hurray, the first of May! Cherries bloom and whimseys
play. Summers joy returns today, writes Eileen Maley to
accompany a scene of children dancing in the grass outside the Field
Gallery, among her late father-in- law Tom Maleys statues. Nis
Kildegaard writes beneath a picture of The Islander basking at port
in golden dawn sunshine: At first light, an early passage on
the faithful veteran of the steamship fleet. Next stop: a perfect,
blue sky Vineyard day.
Is there any taste so sweet, so laced with guilt and ecstasy
as the first squirt of juice as we bite into the meat? muses
Sara Davidson beneath a shot of orange lobster traps and colorful
buoys, stacked and ready.
Every month invites us on a personal visit to another favorite Island
location, a place to enjoy for the next 30 days. Buy the calendar.
