Boston speaker highlights NAACP event
January 13, 2005

Carol Fulp, widely recognized for her work in the Boston community, will speak at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Tuesday night.
Carol Fulp, vice president of Community Relations for John Hancock Financial Services in Boston, will be the featured speaker at the Martha’s Vineyard NAACP’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. dinner next Tuesday, Jan. 18. The festive evening, which also includes an awards ceremony, will be held at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.

Ms. Fulp is a graduate of the University of the State of New York and has a vacation home on the Vineyard. She has received extensive recognition for her work in the Boston community.

Boston Magazine named her as “One of Boston’s Ten Most Interesting Women to Watch” in 1993. Ten years later in 2003, the magazine listed her as one of the most powerful women in Boston.

In her work, Ms. Fulp directs the corporate grants, matching gifts, volunteer and community outreach programs for John Hancock in an effort to ensure that Boston youth who are most in need are served.

In 2004 she received the New England Women’s Leadership Award, the African American Achievement Award, and the Pinnacle Award.

Among other honors, Ms. Fulp has received special recognition from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Patriot Trail Girl Scouts, Boston Urban Bankers, the Boston Jaycees, Roxbury Comprehensive Health Center, Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development, the National Organization for Women, Project Place, and the Tuskegee Institute Alumni Association. Ms. Fulp lives in Newton with her husband, C. Bernard Fulp.

Carrie Tankard, NAACP vice president who oversees the event each year, said that the organization’s new president, Marie Allen, recommended Ms. Fulp as an inspiring speaker. Ms. Tankard said that the group often searches for guest speakers who were actively involved in civil rights activities and marches in the past. Other speakers are chosen because of their willingness to share experiences working in community roles to further civil rights and those who exemplify achievements in a variety of fields.

Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner and Awards Ceremony, Tues., Jan. 18, 6 pm, Harbor View Hotel, Edgartown. $65 donation. Preregister, 508-627-8737.
