I am surrounded
by quiet this Monday morning, Martin Luther King Day, as the snow
that fell overnight has muffled most sounds, even those of the cars
and trucks as they maneuver cautiously down the roads lest they
come upon a patch of frozen ice or snow and start to skid. Most
of the regulars at the bird feeders have also disappeared, as they
always seem to do just before a snowstorm. It is as if they had
been warned by some unseen force or instinct to seek shelter at
another site as a storm was about to hit.
But inside many homes it seemed as if January is birthday month.
Genevieve Rogers celebrated her birthday on Jan. 13 with many congratulatory
phone calls and surrounded by family and friends who love her very
much. The small party at her home included family members and a
few close friends. Among family present were her two sons and their
spouses: Jim and Sylvia Rogers, Jerry and Susan Rogers, daughters
Susan Absten, Alita Zalgenis, and Mary Ellen.
Also helping to celebrate this happy time was Gen's aunt Betty Alley.
We send birthday smiles to grandson Sam Alley who turned 14 on Jan.
11, and granddaughter Talia Rogers who will be 14 on Jan. 21.
Tyrone Araujo also celebrated with a birthday on Sun. Jan. 16, when
a birthday party for this two-year-old was held.
We send condolences to the family of the late Susan Camacho who
died last week after a long illness. Susan was one of the most caring
individuals I have ever met. She was always ready to help and listen
to anyone who needed her and will be missed by all those who knew
her, especially her children, Jane and Bill, and grandson Billy.
The Oak Bluffs School as always is busy with projects and plans.
Mrs. Pacararo's class won the Box Tops Challenge with Mrs. Davey's
class coming in second. Don't forget, folks, that the PTO is still
collecting the Box Tops for Education coupons that you will find
on the top of Pillsbury products.
Remember to mark your calendar for the next PTO meeting, which will
be held on Feb. 15. There will be sitters available at the school
during the meeting for parents who need them.
Once again the Martha's Vineyard Library Association and Island
bookstores are planning the next One Book-One Island
There will be one adult title and another for younger readers. A
list of nominated titles may be found in any Island public or school
library along with ballot boxes so readers can choose a favorite.
Estelle Surprenant recently received an interesting news review
from the New York Times Entertainment section regarding her granddaughter,
Emily Hartford. Emily, a 2004 honors graduate of Hofstra University,
is the daughter of Renee Hartford of Bridgewater and has been starring
as the title character in Harry the Dirty Dog at the
Manhattan Children's Theater. Her enthusiastic portrayal of Harry
earned her special notice in the press.
The Martha's Vineyard Crafts Cooperative has craft contributors
from all the towns on the Island and has recently moved to their
new location, the Union Street Mall in Vineyard Haven. Among Oak
Bluffs craftsmen who have items there are Sherri Hope with her heart-felt
inspired crafts and Sally Evans who makes hand-knitted sweaters
for children. Stop by to see not only these but the many items crafted
by others as well.
This week looks to be a busy one, so enjoy your week and send your
news my way.
