An artist friend,
James Harrington, has frequently described gray as the queen
of colors. There are infinite possibilities of mixed grays,
their subtleties endlessly engaging. Or so I thought. After the past
few weeks of gray weather, I awoke almost in a rapture to finally
see the sun. As I walked Tallulah last Saturday morning, I looked
at the landscape transformed by bright colors and cast shadows. The
light hitting the pucker-brush made it glow intensely violet and hot
pink. I couldn't wait to get back to my studio to play around with
pure color. By the time we got back, the sky was again overcast, and
gray it has stayed since.
Please take note. Prudy Whiting called to say there is a misprint
in the recently mailed out application form for a dog license. Spayed
females are $6 as always.
Creativity makes the mind active and agile. In this spirit, I want
to report on a dinner party given last Saturday evening by Mae Deary
for her golfing friends: Ann Heron, Abbe Burt, Molly Finkelstein,
and Molly Mattoon. An annual event, the theme for the dinner was golf-related
and Mae was quite pleased with her menu which included: salad greens,
spinach balls, mulligan stew with par-snips,
roast goose (representing a hazard at Farm Neck), peanut butter cup
ice cream, and chocolate chip cookies. Drinks were slice
and Greg Norman Cabernet.
Nicholas and Judith Leggett are in New York visiting sister Ann and
mother Barbara for a late Christmas and celebration of Nick's 60th
birthday. Dinner was at Manducatis', a fabulous restaurant across
the street from Ann's house in Long Island City.
Chris Murphy called to say that he is home after bypass surgery at
Massachusetts General Hospital, feeling sore but well. By coincidence,
wheeled into the same room, was Harry Athearn, who had just had a
valve replacement. As Chris commented, what are the odds that two
kids who grew up together on Martha's Vineyard would end up in the
same room at a hospital the size of Mass. General? Happily, Harry
is doing well, too, and should be home by the time you are reading
this.
Library Trustees Hallie Mentzel and Marilyn Hollinshead spent the
weekend in Boston attending a meeting of the American Library Association.
West Tisbury is pleased to welcome two new residents, Andrea and Juliet
Morse. The twins were born on Dec. 16 to Chris and Sheila Morse, and
join big sister Katie.
Forty-nine adults and children crowded into the Children's Room at
the Library last Wednesday to meet Maisy the mouse. She was somewhat
larger than I expected, very trim but tall. Children's librarian Nelia
Decker read several stories about Maisy and her friend, Tallulah.
Everyone sang songs and shook hands with Maisy (paws in her case).
It was a very special story hour.
Daily walks are a lovely part of my day. Partly for exercise, partly
for the joy of being outside in a beautiful place, it's a time to
think about paintings, observe the landscape, play with my dog, and
occasionally to greet a fellow walker. One of my favorite places is
Sepiessa and one of my favorite dog-walking acquaintances was Mr.
Leo Bayer, who died at the end of December. Mr. Bayer and his handsome
black lab, Ranger, seemed to have the same walking schedule as I did.
He always presented a figure of gentlemanly formality, as did Ranger
walking neatly by his side. Ranger died some years ago and Mr. Bayer
eventually had to give up his daily excursions, but I will always
treasure my memories of them both.
Since I began writing this column, I have been asked for my e-mail
address so that you can easily send me any news. One of the things
I like about writing this column is the conversation part, running
into people, attending events, getting phone calls. So I have hesitated
to give out my e-mail address. However, I also recognize time limitations
and the ease of typing something quickly on the computer. Here it
is: hrmhull@gis.net. I hope I will hear from all of you instead of
ads for Lipitor and new virus software.
