March is
here! At the time of this writing, we have yet to see if it will come
in like a lion or lamb but by the time this actually goes to print,
we'll have our answer. I think that I personally hope for the lion,
because I know I'll be wanting a sweet weather lamb desperately by
the end of the month. I think this has been the longest winter on
record.
The American Red Cross Martha's Vineyard Chapter will be holding a
blood drive March 8 from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the Masonic Lodge.
I've learned some interesting facts about donating blood while researching
it on the Internet. Red blood cells kept in a refrigerated state can
only be kept for 42 days or frozen for up to 10 years, while fresh
frozen plasma can only be kept for one year. A more significant issue
is that platelets must be stored at room temperature and can only
be kept for a maximum of five days. Finally, roughly five percent
of the population donates blood, while approximately 70 percent of
the population is eligible to donate. So, if you think there is a
good blood supply out there or that it lasts indefinitely, you now
know the truth. If you can get to the blood drive next week, you very
well may save someone's life.
I got an e-mail from Barbara Reynolds who coordinates the Edgartown
School Spelling Bee, which was held last Tuesday. John Jack
Wallace and Jack O'Malley from fourth grade, Conor Smith and Chris
Pitt from fifth grade, Emelia Armstead
and Eric Bryant from sixth grade, Micah Agnoli and James Phillips
from seventh grade, and Haley Koorse and Whitney O'Brien from eighth
grade competed in the event. After a long elimination round between
Emelia and Haley, Emelia won. Emelia will represent The Edgartown
School in the Island-wide Spelling Bee at the Harbor View Hotel on
March 10, the winner of which will go to Washington, D.C. in May to
compete in the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee. Good luck and congratulations
to everyone involved.
Sgt. Richard Krauss will be the chef at the Edgartown Council on Aging
on March 17 for a St. Patrick's Day celebration. The traditional menu
includes corn beef, cabbage, carrots, and homemade Irish soda bread!
Seating is limited, so call early to reserve your space. The number
is 508-627-4368, ext 14.
Also worth noting is that the council on aging is offering a home-delivered
Easter dinner on Easter Sunday. Please call 508-627-4368 if you would
like to have a meal delivered or if you would like to volunteer to
deliver meals.
Have a great week, everyone. Get me all your vacation news as soon
as you can. |
