Lenten feast on a budget

Fish on Friday has been a time-honored tradition, not only among good Catholics but among all those seeking a tasty and heart-healthy meal. We cannot promise that the fish and chips from the Net Result in Vineyard Haven are heart-healthy, but they sure are tasty.

Keeping these religious roots in mind, Louis Larsen, owner of Net Result, offers a delicious fish and chips special every Friday during Lent at his store’s take-out counter. The heaping plateful of fried haddock and French fries, garnished with cole slaw, and tartar and cocktail sauces, sells for a thrifty $7 every Friday through March 25 instead of the usual $9.50 rate.

"We thought if people knew it was coming up every Friday they could count on it," says Louis. "People who believe could come, and others could take advantage of it too."

He said the lightly breaded haddock and spud feast has been popular, with between 100 to 150 orders every Friday, "which is great for this time of year."

Louis said the aim was to promote the fish market’s take-out business which also serves fried fish and other sandwiches, fried fish plates, a variety of fish salads, and even sushi.
