Here
we are in February school vacation, a sure sign that spring will
soon arrive. But for now if you are looking for sunshine and blue
skies you will have to go south.
Eric and Hope deBettencourt and their children, Emily and Ben, went
to Florida and from there they all enjoyed a Disney cruise for a
few days. Even though it was raining when they arrived, the warmer
temperature was appreciated.
When off-Island last week with friends, we were pleased to run into
our friendly Avon Lady Grace Frye with her son Vincent
in the Dunkin' Donuts Shop in Falmouth. We all had a grand chat
about the times when our children were young and Grace's visits
to our homes with her products were a major social event in our
lives.
Congratulations to Oak Bluffs Deputy Shellfish Constable, Francis
(Scotty) Scott who has successfully completed the 80-hour Shellfish
Officer's State Certification Course. Although this class has been
taught on average every other year, this is the first year that
it has been recognized as a state-sanctioned program. Shellfish
Constable David Grunden will be taking a challenge exam this spring
to get his certification as he had previously taken the training
course.
Tom and Lisa Hall, who moved from the Island to North Carolina last
April, are the proud new parents of Lindsay Marie Hall who was born
on Feb.11 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Lindsay, who weighed 9 pounds, one ounce at birth, has Island grandparents:
Richard and Amelia Hayden of Oak Bluffs. Victor and Nancy Hall of
Louisville, Ky., are the baby's paternal grandparents.
Myles and Lucas Holt, first-graders in the Natick School, spent
their school vacation visiting their grandmother Ginny Hall. Ginny
also had as a guest for the weekend her friend Luanne Simon from
Providence, R.I.
Maureen and Bill Anderson spent a few days in the North Country
with their children, Bill and Doreen Anderson, Gretchen and Ben
Hall, and the Farrissey clan plus numerous grandchildren, who kept
occupied with snowboarding and skiing.
Elizabeth Alley, who turned 93 on March 1, had an early birthday
party last Sunday, Feb. 27. Her two sons, Dennis and Kerry, and
their wives, Megan and Pat, hosted the small but joyous party at
Betty Alley's Vineyard Ave. home. Grandchildren, great- grandchildren,
nieces, nephews and friends all came by to help celebrate.
It sounds as if every day is a party day at our Oak Bluffs Senior
Center. Rose tells me that a new program has started on Tuesdays,
bridge lessons with Anita Pearson at 1 pm. Also on Tuesdays, Diane
Ball will lead a memoir group that will also start at
1 pm. This will consist of writing and sharing your childhood and
growing-up memories.
Remember that Monday is the deadline for news. Let me know how
you spent your winter vacation, and enjoy your week.
