Don't call 911 on your cell phone. It seems your cell phone may not know where you are, at least as far as 911 is concerned. If you are on the Island and have only a cell phone with which to make an emergency call, the number to call is 508 693-1212. Thanks to Della Hardman, who brought this to my attention. The Tisbury Police tell me that this number also connects you directly with the communications center.

Today is the graveside service for a lady who quietly did her best for many years to make our community a better place. When we talk about her, we all have fond memories. Many of us will miss Gertrude Baptiste.

Does Daisy Kimberly know something that we don't? The cleverly decorated window at her Main Street shop Alley Cat sports an announcement about “winter 2005 - breaking all records.” She also announces that she will reopen around Easter. I will be very glad to see her. Then I can feel sure that the threats of snow will be a thing of the past.

Those who enjoyed the Tea and Talk presentation by Dolly Campbell about the early days of the Thrift Shop heard some great stories. Ladies and gentlemen of the Tisbury Senior Center also put on a wonderful fashion show with clothing from the Thrift Shop. I understand some of the models bought the classy fashions they were showing off.

Sandy Whitworth invites you to the senior center on Saturday. Enjoy a soup lunch and keep the bowl. This new twist sounds like fun. The Friends of the Senior Center have purchased pretty new bowls. Choose one and fill it up with your choice of three delicious homemade soups (chowder, curried pumpkin, or Venus de Milo). Venus de Milo is fancy vegetable beef soup. Am I the only one who hasn't heard that before? For $6 you get bowl, soup, salad, roll, dessert and beverage. Lunch begins promptly at noon. Reservations are required. Call 508-696-4205.

Entertainment is also offered. At 1 pm the Tisbury Players will present a free staged reading of Edward Albee's one-act comedy “The American Dream.” Produced and directed by Peter Hillman Luce, the play features actors Eleanor Beth, Nancy Luedeman, Jay Sigler, Myra Stark, and Leslie J. Stark. After the performance there will be a panel discussion on Aging/Ageism in America with Lee Fierro, Russell Hoxsie, and Claire Stefanik. The theater program is supported in part by a grant from the Martha's Vineyard Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Want an update on the tsunami recovery efforts? Chris Hufstader, senior writer for Oxfam America, will tell you about the Asian Tsunami: Reports from the Field. This is an up to-the-minute report from Oxfam America on restoring lives and livelihoods in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Somalia, Indonesia, Burma and the Maldives. Chris, who is an Edgartown native, will be at the Vineyard Haven Library for the Evening Lecture Series next Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Chris will also be the speaker at the Oxfam Hunger Banquet on Wednesday.

The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is next Wednesday at 6 pm at the cafeteria of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. Try your luck in the worldwide “What's for Dinner” lottery. Hosted by the Vineyard Committee on Hunger, the Hunger Banquet is a tradition started by the famine relief group Oxfam to increase awareness of world hunger. Admission is free.

Three types of meals will be served. “High income” meal is what most Americans eat. “Middle income” is described as that eaten by most people in developing countries. Third is a “low income” meal.

There seem to be Mayhews everywhere. The woman who is this year's director of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D. C., is Diana Mayhew. We wish her lots of sunshine and beautiful blossoms.

Happy birthday today to Helen Johnson. Tomorrow is a special day for Shirley Adams. On Sunday, greetings go out to Jonathon Scoggins, Dolores Ruckman, and Laurel Chapman. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Monday to Evan Kristal. Tuesday is party time for Michelle O'Donnell.

Heard on Main Street: “Share some memories. Everyone likes to hear stories about the past.”
