It's
marginally warmer, or, at least, a little less frigid on this Monday
morning, and a hint of spring and optimism is in the air if you
look for it. Barbara Seward is home after a month's visit with her
sister and brother-in-law, Nancie and Frank Buell, in Ellenton,
Fla. She got home just in time for the Feb. 28 snow, which began
20 minutes after she had settled into her house. She reported that
Florida was lovely when it was sunny but that the mornings and evenings
were chilly to cold.
The Island's top spellers are assembled today, (Thursday) at the
Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown for the annual spelling bee sponsored
by The Times. Good luck to Chilmark fifth-grader Natalie Poole,
who vies for this year's title.
Congratulations to Josh Gamson, son of Bill and Zee Gamson, who
has a new book out entitled, The Fabulous Sylvester.
The book is about a talented and flambuoyant diva in San Francisco
in the 1970s. Wil Haygood, author of Black and White, The
Life of Sammy Davis, Jr., writes of Josh's book, Sylvester
James was one of the most enchanting and shocking diva figures to
emerge onto the American music scene in the 1970s. His falsetto
voice, take-no-prisoners determination, and flight into fame were
something to behold. Gamson tells this story with galvanizing insight,
eloquence, and more than a little tenderness. Josh is a sociologist
and teaches popular culture and media at the University of San Francisco.
Christiana Hodges, twin sister of Jennifer Christy, came down from
her home in Cornwall, Vt., for a weekend visit to help Jenny with
her twin daughters, Eloise and Adrienne.
The library's afternoon book group will meet Monday, March 14 at
3 pm to discuss Pearl Buck's classic, The Good Earth.
Everyone is welcome to join them.
The PTO is giving a pizza thank-you party for school families at
the community center tomorrow. We want to thank everyone for
their support, says Christina Soulagnet of the PTO.
A reminder to all those on the Slip Waiting List to have a fax,
letter, or e-mail in to executive secretary Tim Carroll by next
Tuesday, March 15. Fax number is 508-645-2110; Post Office box number
is 119, Chilmark.
