FILM
Film fest on the way
March 10, 2005
Film buffs, get
ready to revel in your favorite art form. Dozens of new and varied
creations will be screened at the fifth annual Martha's Vineyard Independent
Film Festival March 18 through 20 at the Chilmark Community Center.
Running from Friday evening right through Sunday evening, the festival
is featuring award winning films from around the globe, and some made
right here on Martha's Vineyard too. Ethnic meals, home-made popcorn,
receptions, and live music will add to the enjoyment. Complimentary
events include a Filmmaker Panel Saturday afternoon and a Sunday Samba
Brunch.
Organizer Thomas Bena recently listed some of the high points in the
many-faceted program. Among the evening feature presentations are
Wim Wender's Land of Plenty, a sobering and uplifting
look at America; Paternal Instinct, featuring two gay
men, one good witch, and a baby; War is Sell, all about
war propaganda; and The Take, exploring the takeover of
Argentinean factories by workers. A number of short films on Iraq,
by an Iraqi, will be shown as well as the short Apology,
in which Americans send out an apology for the torture of Iraqi prisoners.
Parallel Lines documents a post-911 road trip from California
back home to New York. On a lighter note is Single on M.V.
by Stacey Witt. There will be an array of varied and compelling shorts
too. Island filmmaker Jeremy Mayhew's short film, In Haiti's
Hands, on Saturday tells of Haiti's poor and a group of nuns
trying to help. Sad Song begins and ends the weekend program.
Martha's Vineyard Independent Film Festival, March 18 to 20, Chilmark
Community Center. Watch for full festival details in next week's Times
Calendar section.
