Congratulations
to Lincoln and Allen Hanson. They have two new granddaughters, born
January 14. The identical twin girls were born at Aspen, Colorado,
to Kim and Deborah Hanson. The girls were given middle names for their
grandmothers. Jade Allen Hanson weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounces, and Jude
Marieta weighed 5 pounds, 11 ounces. Proud aunts are Leslie Look of
Oak Bluffs and Sara Alwardt of West Tisbury.
Last week I thought at first I was imagining the glorious blue glow
inside the piles of fresh snow. Old paintings showed this blue glowing
inside icebergs and ice floes in Alaska. I had assumed it was artistic
license. I was still not sure it wasn't imagination until several
other friends confirmed they saw it as well. The wonderful blue glow
has not lost its wonder simply because the scientists tell us it has
to do with the thickness of the ice and the water content. What a
treat to see something so very special.
After 14 years of displaying the work of Island artisans at various
locations in Edgartown and Tisbury, the Martha's Vineyard Craft Cooperative
now has a home. The non-profit cooperative has moved to the Union
Street Mall. The new space is small but cozy with the work of 25 artisans
and antiques. They are open from 11 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
If you have a little one getting ready to enter school, call now to
pre-register your child for kindergarten. Call Barbara Armstrong at
the Tisbury School (508-696-6500) by March 18 between 9 am and 3 pm.
The child must be five years of age on or before September first and
live in Tisbury or wish to register as a School Choice student
Surplus Food Distribution is tomorrow at 2 pm. This is another program
sponsored by the Vineyard Committee on Hunger. The groceries will
be given out at the First Baptist Church Parish House on William Street,
next door to the Church at the corner of Spring Street. To qualify
you must be in programs such as WIC, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance,
AFDC, SSI, Head Start, Veterans Aid, or Welfare.
Muriel Laverty is still collecting clothing for Nicaraguan children.
She hopes to be on-Island the week of March 21 to collect things.
She says they need clean white shirts for children and men, T-shirts
up to size XL but mostly children's, summer dresses for girls up to
size 12, and always: baby clothes and cloth diapers. She emphasizes
that all clothing should be clean and stain-free with all buttons
and zippers working. If you can gather these items and hold them for
her, I will let you know exactly when she will be here. Perhaps you
saw her letter in the Times.
Are you hungry for corned beef and cabbage? On Saturday the ladies
of the First Baptist Church will serve the traditional dinner for
only $10. Call 508-693-1539 for tickets.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Dorothy Gould - today
and tomorrow. Dorothy was born at midnight on March 10, so she can
celebrate both days. Tomorrow, wish a very happy birthday to Nan Carter.
Mark Daniels and James Taylor celebrate on Saturday. Wish the best
to Barbara Howell on Sunday. Light the candles on Tuesday for Carolyn
Henderson, Jib Ellis, Dexter Mello, and Jay Segel. Wednesday belongs
to Jeanne Gaudet. Fifty big birthday balloon wishes go to Kevin Voyer
on Sunday. He will be marking half a century. Congratulations, Kevin.
