CHILMARK
March 17, 2005

By Jacqueline Sexton - 508-645-2895 - jschil@adelphia.net

Chilmark will be jumping this weekend, signaling the end of the winter doldrums. We hope.

Thomas Bena of Sea The World Productions, and his colleagues will usher in the fifth season of his Martha's Vineyard Independent Film Festival, which has been attracting film aficionados from all over, this weekend at the community center. It's a three-day extravaganza of films from around the world, live music, and ethnic food. The films range from five-minute shorts to feature length and cover a wide diversity of topics and themes from sex in conservative Texas schools to how the Christian fundamentalists got hold of our government to 20 short films about Iraq by an Iraqi.

Jeremy Mayhew, Chilmark film-maker, did all the graphic designing for filmbills, posters and the web site. His latest film will play in the short section on Saturday afternoon." Ruby Hoy and her teen band will play, and Heather Gude and Marvin Jones are in charge of the Thai and Mexican buffet. Popcorn will also be available.

It's all served up in a convivial and informal style with breaks between films, live music, comfy sofas and the chance to discuss whatever occurs to you about the films with the film-makers themselves. Doors open at 6 pm tomorrow, Friday, March 18.

The Chilmark Housing Committee will focus discussion on the financial aspects of the Middle Line affordable housing project at its next public hearing on Wednesday, March 30, 7:30 pm, at town hall. Committee members Molly Flender, Zelda Gamson, Steve Schwab, and Deborah Cini, among others, have been working long and hard on this project, which is believed to be the first affordable housing effort in Chilmark.

The Island has no shortage of aspiring young musicians, and Lydia Fischer is among them. She participated last weekend in the South East Musical Festival in Attleboro, along with students from other Massachusetts towns.

Jenny Christy continues to lead her group of enthusiastic youngsters, ages five and up, through the wonders of books and making art. Next Wednesday, March 23, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, she will introduce them to the books about animals by Linda Ashman, who also illustrates her books. They will make drawings of animals after reading the books. Call Ms. Christy at 645-3360 for more information.

Happy birthday to Ann Hale and Heather Elliston on March 13, and to Elise Elliston next Monday , March 21.

Dorothy Bangs, the daffodil lady for the American Cancer Society, would like all Chilmarkers to be aware that they can buy the daffodils on Thursday, March 24 from 10 am until they're gone at Alley's where Debbie Magnuson will be selling them, and at the West Tisbury post offices. Any Chilmark resident who would like to volunteer to sell them in Chilmark next year, should call Mrs. Bangs and let her now.

Our yard looks as though Moshup had marched in and trampled everything he saw and yanked out a number of venerable old spruces and cedars before he strode out. A friend from Edgartown said he couldn't find our driveway - “There's so much brush around.” It's going to be a long “spring.”
