Rumor has it that spring is coming to Martha's Vineyard this week!
I've not seen any indication that there is any truth to this wild
rumor, but one can hope. When speaking to a friend this week, I likened
the end of winter and beginning of spring to the Boston Red Sox winning
the World Series. While they were ahead at the bottom of the eighth,
I still didn't have great faith that they would actually win. And
even though the sun is warm, on those rare occasions when it comes
out, and the calendar says First Day of Spring in big letters, I have
my doubts! But, as with everything in life, chocolate helps! I have
decided that for next year I'm going to buy snowshoes to get my winter
exercise and a snow blower. I will either be very ready for another
winter like this or I will be guaranteeing that it will not snow next
year. Either way, I figure I win!
The Edgartown Council on Aging will be having their Birthday Lunch,
celebrating February and March birthdays, on March 25 starting at
12:30 pm. They will be serving Indonesian Chicken with rice and stir-fried
vegetables. They are also offering another cooking class, on March
31 at 1 pm. This one gives you the opportunity to learn how to make
spring fruit tarts and enjoy a cup of tea. It sounds yummy! And if
I know Kerry, it will be delicious! The cost for either of these events
is $5.
Sarah Nevin emailed me to let everyone know that the public is invited
to the Edgartown Candidates' Forum on Tuesday, April 5, at 7 pm in
the Baylies Room at the Old Whaling Church. The event is sponsored
by the League of Women Voters of Martha's Vineyard and will offer
an opportunity to hear statements from those running for public office
and to ask questions on topics of special importance.
Don't forget the information sessions about the proposed library expansion
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Jim and Debbie Athearn have returned from a trip to Pine Island, Fla.
In an it's a small world story, they decided to try to
see a Red Sox game in Fort Meyers one day but didn't have tickets.
But they headed over anyway, figuring they could buy tickets when
they got there. They drove into the lot, found a scalper and bought
a couple of tickets. Taking a close look at the tickets, they noticed
the name on them was Nelson DeBettencourt. They got to their seats
and laughed because Roy (Nelson) and Donna DeBettencourt were sitting
in front of them!
As they had two extra tickets, they decided to sell them. What a coincidence
that Debbie and Jim bought them! If anyone is interested, there are
a lot of great animals at the MSPCA looking for homes. My kids and
I pop in there from time to time to see what's new. They currently
have a white rabbit, two guinea pigs, several cats and dogs available.
If you can give a critter a good home, stop by and talk with one of
the staff members about adoption.
That's it for this week's news. Have a great week.
