Best
wishes for a rapid recovery go to Trip Barnes. We hope he is home
by now, recuperating from by-pass surgery in Boston.
Congratulations to Joy Alwardt, now living in Middleboro, and Donald
J. Gallant of Middleboro. They are engaged to be married in July.
Joy is the granddaughter of Helen Alwardt and of Betty and Bob Quinn.
She is the daughter of Herman and Jeanne Alwardt of Raymond, N.H.
Donald is the son of Donald and Bonnie Gallant of Middleboro.
Last week's accident where a car drove off Main Street through two
hedges and into a house was startling. I have not seen the car, but
the hedge that fronts on Main Street seemed only slightly less damaged
than the section plowed out by the car. It hardly seems possible that
the car could still be moving by the time it hit the house. Fortunately,
the house was recently sold, and no one had moved in yet. Some years
ago a good friend, Carolyn Henderson, owned that house. She is now
in North Carolina but misses being here on the Island.
Some people say they are not getting older; they are getting better.
You can do better at getting old. Next week on Saturday the Tisbury
Senior Center will present a session on aging. All ages are invited.
Dr. Alan Abrams, M.D., is a geriatrician with a practice in Boston
who consults part-time on the Island. He will tell you about Productive
Aging at 1 pm on March 26 at the center. Modern scientific health
care can stretch the boundaries of old age. Whole body
wellness includes our physical, mental, and spiritual practices. There
will be a sampling of foods that have been shown to optimize successful
aging. Call 508-696-4205 to reserve your seat. There is no charge
for the presentation.
Jaws Fest is coming. Beginning June 3 movie fans will have a weekend
full of memories and celebrations in Tisbury. The Martha's Vineyard
Chamber of Commerce would like to see any photographs from the filming
30 years ago. For more information call 508-693-4486 or go online
to www.mvy.com
The town of Tisbury wants to know if you are paying attention. Did
you see the Classified Section in last week's Times? Just in time
for St. Patrick's Day, they are changing the residential trash stickers
from orange to green. The price is still $4. After April 1 you can
buy only green ones. The orange ones will be good until June, 2006.
I love St. Patrick's Day in America. Where else do you find people
with no Irish ancestry wearing green just for fun and pretending to
be Irish for a day?
Dorothy Bangs is selling daffodils to support the American Cancer
Society. Call her at 508-693-0969. She will sell more daffodils next
Wednesday morning at 9 am at Cronig's Market.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Austin Chandler
who turns seven. Doug Dorchester marks his 81st birthday today. Lots
of warm greetings go tomorrow to Lois Kavanagh, Susan Mone, Susan
Weyl, and Sondra Gonsalves. On Sunday wish the best to Sheri Thomas
and Phoenix Russell. Happy birthday on Monday to Skip Bailey and to
Barbara Dacey, whose dulcet tones you hear on WMVY.
Heard on Main Street: Here's wishing you the luck of the Irish
today.
