I
know the calendar says that spring is here, but as I sit here on
a dark Monday morning wrapped in two sweaters and a Mexican rebozo
waiting for the indoor temperature to climb out of the 50s, it certainly
doesn't seem like it. Even given the Vineyard's reputation for getting
a glancing blow for spring, it's a pretty sorry performance.
However, we do what we can, and Betty Boyd has put up a show of
gaudy flowers at the library and Nancy Cabot's Friday painters at
the Howes House were painting gorgeous flowers in several shades
of pink to red a week ago. I sniffed the unmistakable, heady aroma
of a threatened skunk the day after St. Patrick's Day and decided
that was a sure sign of spring. And we have one inch of daffodil
leaves showing, so things should be looking up.
Pastor Nancy Collins is planning for the usual Easter crowd at church
next Sunday, which will be followed by an Easter egg hunt - rain,
snow or sunshine. She hopes to have the performing arts club provide
music for the service. Anyone who wants to start early is invited
to the sunrise service at Bend in the Road Beach in Edgartown and
a restorative breakfast afterwards put on by the Edgartown church.
The library's Wednesday evening program series will embark on something
new next week when landscape artist Nancy Furino will give an oil
painting demonstration on Wednesday, March 30, from 5 to 7 pm. Mrs.
Furino, a well known Island painter for more than 30 years, will
work on canvas and share the process with the audience. Those attending
will be able to ask questions as she paints. The Wednesday evening
series is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Everyone is welcome,
and admission is free.
The housing committee, which continues to be responsive to community
suggestions for its affordable housing project at Middle Line Rd.,
met for discussion on March 16 with selectmen and the finance committee
at town hall. A public hearing will take place on Wednesday March
30, and the housing committee will give a report at Town Meeting
in April.
Jenny Christy's after-school group of children ages five and up
will read Louise Erdrich's Grandmother's Pigeon, after
which they will make bird sculptures with clay. Each person will
make two birds, one for his or her self and the other as a gift
for some special person. At the library Wednesday, March
30 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.
