David
Shaw
David Shaw, 84, died on March 8, at Hill House in Bath, Maine. He
was born in Washington, D.C. to Stewart Baker Shaw and Jennie Kerr
Shaw and spent his childhood in College Park, Md. He attended the
University of Maryland and graduated from the MIT School of Architecture.
During World War II, David served in the Merchant Marines as Commander
of a sea-going tug in the European Theatre. After the war, he practiced
architecture in Hyattsville, Md., with the firm of Paul Kea &
Associates, and eventually had his own firm that designed and built
many schools in the Washington-Maryland area.
David spent time each summer on Martha's Vineyard, together with his
wife Gretchen V.T. Shaw and their three children. Gretchen's parents,
Chester and Alma Van Tassel, retired to the Island in 1955 and were
long-time year-round residents of Edgartown. Gretchen's younger brother,
Peter Van Tassel, now lives year-round in the same South Water Street
house, which formerly belonged to their parents.
Sailing was one of the most important aspects of David's life. He
was Commodore of the West River Sailing Club in Galesville, Md., and
sailed for many years on Chesapeake Bay. He sailed his yawl Skye from
the Chesapeake to the Vineyard on more than one occasion. Since moving
to Maine after his retirement, he spent much time on Skye and cruised
offshore to Newfoundland and Labrador.
In addition to Gretchen, his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his
three children, Alison and her partner, Sue Dawson, of Oak Bluffs;
Stephen, of Brunswick, Maine; and Michael and his wife, Karen, of
San Rafael, Calif.; his four grandchildren, Isobel and Maria Shaw
of San Rafael, and Sarah and Jesse Shaw Dawson of Oak Bluffs; and
six nephews, two nieces, and their families.
David was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick,
Maine. Donations in his memory may be made to the church, P.O. Box

be private.

D. Stewart
Arthur Douglas Stewart died on March 15 at Brigham and Women's Hospital
in Boston after surgery and a brief illness. He was born June 19,
1924 in the Bronx, N.Y., the only child of Arthur M. and Phoebe McGowan
Stewart. He and his parents vacationed on the Vineyard from the time
he was four months old. Doug graduated from Christopher Columbus High
School in the Bronx and received his bachelor and Master of Arts degrees
from Columbia University Teachers College. He later completed graduate
studies at Simmons College in Boston. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant
J.G. in the United States Navy, and served in the Pacific during World
War II. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Kathryn, for 56 years.
Doug began his long teaching career in New Rochelle, N.Y., in 1948
as a junior high school science teacher. In 1951, he and Kathryn moved
to the Vineyard where he taught science and math first at the Edgartown
High School and then at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. During
his tenure there he also served as chairman of the science department,
retiring in 1980.
Doug was five times Master of the Martha's Vineyard Lodge and current
Chaplain of the Oriental-Martha's Vineyard Lodge. He was a member
of the George W. Goethals American Legion Post 257, also serving as
Chaplain. He was a tenor soloist in the Martha's Vineyard Chorus.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Vineyard Haven, he served
as trustee, deacon, treasurer, and choir member. As a founding member
of the local Scottish Society, Doug enjoyed celebrating his Scottish
heritage by wearing his kilt and carrying banners in the July fourth
parade.
After his retirement, he repaired clocks and watches for many people
on the Vineyard. He was well known for the jokes and stories he shared
with his many friends. With his wife he enjoyed traveling in the United
States and abroad. Doug is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughters
Dr. Carolee Stewart and Barbara Stewart Lopes; and grandchildren Dorian,
Nathan, and Robyn Lopes.
His graveside service was held on March 19 in Oak Grove Cemetery,
Vineyard Haven, officiated by the Rev. Roger Spinney with full military
honors offered by the Veterans of Martha's Vineyard. A Masonic service
took place on March 18, offered by the Oriental-Martha's Vineyard
Masonic Lodge. Donations in his honor may be made to First Baptist

service will be held in June after the renovations are completed to

Nancy G. Smith-Swift
Nancy Gaynelle Smith-Swift who was born October 10, 1957 to Elmer
Joseph Smith Jr., and Anne Valjean Work Smith, died on March 19. The
youngest of three daughters, Nancy, attended St. Teresa of Avila elementary
in Perrysville, Pa., North Allegheny High school in Pittsburgh, Pa.,
and continued her educational studies earning her master of business
administration in management information systems from Robert Morris
University. Nancy began her diverse business career in 1985 when she
was hired by EDP Systems and relocated to South Boston. Numerous promotions
and career advancements were bestowed on her during her tenure as
a senior systems analyst for several Fortune 500 companies including
the Boston Company, Fidelity Investments, and the Federal Reserve
Bank of Boston.
Nancy, a Pittsburgh native enchanted by the Bostonian culture, purchased
property in South Boston and immersed herself in the life of the local
community, supporting such various charitable causes as the annual
Snowball, the Race for Life, SailBoston, Fidelity Follies, the Humane
Society, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals. She joined the Gates of Heaven choir and participated there
as a lector to the faithful. She continued in her faithful devotion
as a lector for St. Augustine's Church in Vineyard Haven.
Her love for life inspired all and on January 8, 2000, she married
the love of her life, Alaric K. Swift, the beloved son of Catherine
and Dean R. Swift, of Vineyard Haven. She is survived by her husband,
Alaric, of South Boston; her mother Catherine Swift, of Vineyard Haven;
her sisters VaIjean Anne Smith-Hodek and her husband Robert F. of
Sarver Pa., and Michele Anne Smith, of Bellevue, Pa.; her aunts, and
uncles, cousins, family and friends everywhere.
The Roman Catholic funeral Mass was March 23, at St. Vincent de Paul,
South Boston. Interment will be Thursday March 24, 1 pm, at Oak Grove
Cemetery, State Road, Vineyard Haven.

W. Butler
Holly W. Butler, a former resident of Vineyard Haven, died March 3
of complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known
as Lou Gehrig's Disease, at Buckingham's Choice, a long-term health
care facility, in Adamstown, Md. She was 73. She was predeceased by
her husband, Roger, who died in 1996, also from ALS.
Mrs. Butler was born on April 19, 1931 in Richmond, Va. While an undergraduate
at Radcliffe College (Harvard University) she married Roger L. Butler
(Harvard, 1951) in 1952 and graduated from Radcliffe in 1953. Mrs.
Butler spent her career in direct mail advertising and marketing at
several advertising agencies based in Connecticut and New York City,
while also staying very active in Radcliffe alumnae programs.
The Butlers moved from Weston, Conn., in 1994, retiring to the Chesapeake
Bay area on the Northern Neck area in Virginia. In 1996, after her
husband's death, she relocated back up north to New York City. Mrs.
Butler moved to Martha's Vineyard in 2001, and then returned to Manhattan
in early 2004.
While a resident of Vineyard Haven, Mrs. Butler was on the board of
Vineyard House, Inc., the League of Women Voters, as well as being
active with the Martha's Vineyard Peace Council and Grace Church.
Upon her move from the island, her children retained her home on Moonstone
Way.
Mrs. Butler's hobbies included extensive directing and producing in
community theatre and local Connecticut high school musical theatre,
skiing, and photography.
Mrs. Butler is survived by her daughter, Julie Butler Evans, and son-in-law,
Jon Evans, of New Canaan, Conn., and their children, Janet and Jack
Evans and Kenneth Flannery of New Canaan, Conn., and Corporal Blake
Flannery, USMC, of Camp Pendleton, Calif.; and her son, Kenneth Butler,
daughter-in-law Deborah Butler and grandchildren Brooke and Faith
Butler of Ijamsville, Md., and Blaine Butler of Keene, N.H.
A memorial service will be held on April 16 at Norfield Congregational
Church in Weston, Connecticut at 11 am. Donations may be made in the

Christin R. Bouchard
Christin Renee Bouchard, 31, of Norwood died March 22 at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis. She was the beloved daughter of Donna Bouchard-Ciriello
of Vineyard Haven and Paul T. Bouchard of Colrain, and devoted mother

Lopes
Viola J. (Authier) Lopes, 88, of Tisbury died on March 20 at St.
Joseph's Manor Nursing Home in Brockton after a period of failing
health. She was the wife of Constantine V. Lopes, who predeceased
her.
Born in Rochester on March 12, 1917, a daughter of Joseph and Oliva
(Piche) Authier, she was raised in Rochester, Nantucket, and on
Martha's Vineyard where she graduated from Tisbury High School.
She married her husband on March 29, 1937. The couple built a home
and lived on Martha's Vineyard until 1960 when they moved to Brighton.
They retired in 1975 and moved back to the Vineyard.
A homemaker, she enjoyed reading, writing, church activities, visiting
shut-ins and those in rest homes, but most of all baking bread to
sell in local stores. During the summer in the 1980s and 1990s she
could be found early each morning picking blueberries in her cultivated
blueberry patch. She carefully chose the best and would arrange
them neatly in baskets to deliver and sell at Norton's Farm stand.
She was a member of the Legion of Mary in Brighton, the Ladies Guild
in Vineyard Haven, and a member of the choir in both parishes.
She is survived by seven children: the Rev. Thomas C. Lopes of Easton;
Jacqueline C. LaBatt and husband, Earl, of Arlington, Vt.; Nancy
R. Ferreira and husband, Ronald, of Randolph; Richard J. Lopes and
wife, Carolyn, of Newton; Peter F. Lopes and wife, Carol, of Norfolk;
Margaret M. O'Donnell of Chelmsford; and Constantine P. Lopes and
wife, Clairette, of Framingham. She also leaves a sister, Gloria
Norton and husband Warren of Edgartown, 27 grandchildren, 22 great
grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, and many nieces and
nephews. She also was the sister of Joseph, Raymond, and Roland
Authier, Dora Beauchemin and Yvonne Hickey, who all predeceased
her.
A funeral Mass was held on March 23 in Immaculate Conception Church,
Easton. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Oak Bluffs. Arrangements
are by Kane Funeral Home, Easton.
