CHILMARK

Fifth graders didn't complain about the atrocious weather last week. They sensibly took advantage of it and went off on their ski trip, part of the outing program. This week and next they will be dealing, along with third graders, with the MCAS reading test. All of which are signs that we're rushing to the end of the school year.

This weekend Hans Christian Andersen has center stage in a two-day program designed by storyteller Lillian Kellman. Ms. Kellman is, technically, a retired librarian, but has in fact been at the heart of both the school and the library telling her fables and organizing book events for the last 20 years. This year, Andersen's birthday, April 2, 1805, coincides with International Children's Book Day. Accordingly, Ms. Kellman has arranged a two-day program of Andersen's tales, to be told by a witch, music, and refreshments starting tomorrow, Friday, April 1, at 1 pm at the school. The Danish pastries will be baked especially for the occasion by Beth Kramer who owns Biga Bakery with her husband, Doug Reid, and does all the baking. Ms. Kellman has planned a display of,

in her words, Andersen's “gorgeously illustrated editions from all over the world.” His tales, originally written in Danish, have been translated into almost all the world's languages.

The following day, Saturday, April 2 at 10:30 am, festivities will continue, at the library, again with music, refreshments, and stories. There will also be book displays and paper-cutting activities of the kind that Andersen himself used to do. Guest musicians will include Ray Kellman, recorder; Edie Yoder, flute; and violinists Susan McGhee and, possibly, members of the Tinus family.

The Friends of the Chilmark Pre-school invite parents to an open house next Monday, April 4, from 4 until 6 pm at the Chilmark School. Anyone interested in learning more about the program, seeing the space and meeting the director/lead teacher and other board members is welcome.

The pre-school will open next September and can accommodate up to 15 children in a classroom at the Chilmark School. The classroom will be staffed by two qualified early childhood professionals. Children ages two years, nine months (by August 31,' 05) through five will be eligible for this fully licensed, play-based program. For more information, you may call 645-9998.

Parents of kindergarteners may register their children for next year at the school next Tuesday, April 5 at 7 pm. This is for parents only; a later date will be arranged to bring the children to the school for a visit.

And, finally, Jenny Christy's after-school program for ages five and up will meet at the library on Wednesday, April 6 and 13, 3:30 to 4:30 pm to read Leo Liommi's book “On My Beach There Are Many Pebbles,” after which they will paint some rocks.
