Jewelry maker Lilla Warren.

Dazzling bobbles dangle, enticing jewelry buyers.

Lilla
Warren is pretty, petite, and quiet generally unprepossessing.
The 17-year-old junior at Marthas Vineyard Regional High School
will be an excellent diplomat. And thats why she is making delicate
silver and bead earrings and selling them at Rainy Day in Vineyard
Haven.
It is Lillas dream to go to Australia with a student ambassador
program called People to People. The program was started by President
Eisenhower in the 1950s after World War II. The goal was to send American
youth overseas with the dual purpose of building international relations
and enabling the United States children to experience other cultures.
Lilla calls it really in-depth tourism.
People to People also sends groups of youngsters to destinations throughout
Asia, Europe, and South America.
Lilla plans to travel to Australia in July with some 40 high school
students from around the Cape and Islands. The youngsters will meet
with politicians and others in the Australian government and spend
part of their 18-day visit staying in the home of an Australian family.
Regional high school students Bethany deBettencourt, a junior, and
freshman Shelagh Kelley will also participate in the trip. Bethany,
Lillas best friend, is responsible for getting Lilla excited
about the program.
People to People is perpetuated by the recommendations of former participants,
one of whom recommended Bethany. When she received information in
the mail about People to People, Bethany shared it with Lilla. Oak
Bluffs School librarian Pam Melrose wrote a recommendation to help
get Lilla accepted as well. Now both girls are attending meetings
on the Cape, learning what to expect from their upcoming adventure.
Lilla has received more information from high school freshmen Amanda
Brown and Emily Bevis who traveled to the United Kingdom with the
program as elementary school students.
Adult Islanders are involved as well, including program leaders Joanne
Colley and her husband, John. Pam Melrose hopes to accompany the group
as a chaperone.
Art pays off
Lilla, who says she has been surrounded by art and music all her life,
has varied creative interests. She is a member of the Minnesingers,
the elite singing group, and is fascinated by photography. She also
loves to paint and draw.
Lilla became interested in jewelry-making when her older cousin gave
her necklaces and earrings that she was making. Lilla started off
simply, stringing beads and making uncomplicated necklaces for her
mother and herself. Four years ago she began to experiment with making
earrings. Over time, her earrings have become more complex and now
they are intricately combined colors and textures, strung on twisted
bits of silver wire. Some are long and flowing, some are shorter clumps
of round beads.
Late this winter, Heather Kochin, a family friend and co-owner of
Rainy Day where Lilla got her first job two years ago, offered to
see if the earrings might sell at her store. Heather, who Lilla refers
to as amazing, offered Lilla 100 percent of the profits
from the sales to help finance her trip.
Eight pair of earrings sold in two weeks.
I want to make them one of my main lines for the summer season,
says Heather.
The earrings fit well with the bright, perky Rainy Day atmosphere.
Heather says she loves the fact that they are a local product made
by an Island girl who is a former employee.
Lilla is pleased to oblige, but insists that once she has raised enough
money for the trip, which she needs to do by May, she will no longer
let Heather give her all of her profits.
I want to do something with jewelry for the rest of my life!
says Lilla. She would like to go to art school, or at least to a school
with a strong arts program.
Off to a good start, she has been commissioned to make custom earrings
to match the bridesmaids dresses in the upcoming wedding of
Heathers assistant, Melissa. Lillas earrings will continue
to be available at Rainy Day, and she is happy to take special orders.
