Food Pantry
closes for the season
On Friday, April 15, the Island Food Pantry will close after its 24th
season. According to volunteer Tom Hiller, the total number of visits
for the season was down slightly from recent years.
Pantry coordinator Armen Hanjian extends thanks for the hard work
of the more than 40 volunteers who maintain the pantry, and to the
community for its donations of food and dollars.
The pantry is housed in the United Methodist Church in Vineyard Haven.
Mr. Hanjian reminds the public that the pantry depends entirely on
local support. No federal or state aid is received.
Although regular hours are ending tomorrow, those in need of emergency
food should call and leave a message at 508-693-4764.
Also April 15 marks the last distribution day for surplus food until
next fall. Those who qualify may go to the First Baptist Church parish
hall on William Street in Vineyard Haven for pantry staples to help
over the summer. Call Betty Burton for more information, 508-693-5339.
Walkers wanted for all-night marathon
The Relay for Life will be held June 10 and 11 at the Marthas
Vineyard Regional High School. The event will feature teams of walkers
circling the track from Friday evening through Saturday morning.
Those who took part in last years inaugural event cant
wait to do it again. Relay for Life benefits the American Cancer Society,
and the evening includes many wonderful activities such as the candle
lighting ceremony to honor those who battle cancer.
Need more information? There will be a meeting on Tuesday, April 26
at 5:30 pm at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Call Kathy Stinson
at 508-693-6150 for all the details.
