EDGARTOWN
April 14, 2005

By Gail Craig - 508-627-3754 - gail@vineyard.net

What a day it was today, a gift from the gods after a long winter! I hope everyone got to enjoy the day outside. We walked the beach with the dogs, visited with friends, and played in the yard. The bonus was seeing the biplane fly over our yard! Thanks for the visit, Michael. As always, you made our day!

It's amazing what happens if you toss things out to the powers that be in the Universe. Last week, I was thinking that at this time last year, my friend Felicia and I were training for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Sad that I'm not doing it again (yet), I thought, “I can at least support someone who is walking it”, but how would I find that out? Literally 24 hours after this all went through my head, Aimee Blood of Edgartown called me, wanting to share with Edgartown readers that she and her mother, Ann Blood, are taking part in the Boston Walk in May. It is a two-day, 39-mile event to help fight breast cancer and it is an awesome and tiring experience. So, if you see two powerful women out there walking with two cocker spaniels, give a cheer, toot your horn, wave your hand or say “thank you” to two people making a difference. If you want to know more about the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, visit their site at www.avonwalk.org, or call Aimee at 774-563-0688.

Always the comedian, Mike Delis went to Mocha Mott's recently with his girlfriend, Crystal Roy. When they sat down, he told her he had some good news and bad news for her. The good news was that he had “that dime in ring” she wanted. The bad news was apparently that it was April Fool's Day and he took out a piece of copper pipe with a dime riveted to the top of it! Lucky for him, Crystal has a sense of humor because she didn't kill him. He did, however, follow that lovely piece of jewelry with the real thing, a beautiful engagement ring that Riley and I admired the other day. Michael not only has good taste in women, he has a mighty fine eye for jewelry as well, copper pipe aside. Congratulations to the happy couple!

My apologies to Jeffrey Enos, whose e-mail of March 29 got filtered to my “junk” pile. Really, it's nothing personal, Jeffrey! Jeff wanted to let me know that he had just heard the pinkletinks near Jernegan Pond. I have since listened to them myself - a joyous and magical sound if ever there was one.

Peter Herrmann reported that he was driving home on Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, following a trip to Wisconsin. It was cloudy in Indiana and then rainy in Ohio and then turned to snow, until they were in complete blizzard conditions in Erie, Pennsylvania. US 90 was closed, cars were off the road and they finally had to take shelter in a hotel for the night, where they suffered through a power outage as well, due to the storm. When they were finally able to travel again the next day, they had to dig themselves out of knee-high snow and take an alternate route home, as US 90 was still closed. The roads and traveling were still bad, with trucks off the road and driving slowly until they were well through New York. He said it was like a bad dream. So, our weather might be a little dreary these days but at least one Islander can vouch for the fact that it's not the worst he's seen in April!

On our way to town on Thursday, we saw something in the road by Sweetened Water Pond. Knowing the time of year, I slowed and saw it was a turtle. Naturally, we did the honorable thing. After telling my kids about 18 times why I was stopping, I jumped out, held up traffic, and whisked said turtle off to safety, for our third turtle save overall. Thanks to everyone who stopped to let me run across the road, and for laughing at me as I was doing it.

On that note, have a great week and watch out for all the spring critters sharing our roads out there!
