Elusive spring
is supposedly here and some days the weather might agree with the
calendar, but don't relax because the chances are about even that
cooler temperatures could work their way back in at any time.
Patricia Costa along with Pat and Kerry Alley joined up with a tour
group to vacation in warm and beautiful Costa Rica last week. In
Atlanta they met up with Kerry's cousin Sandra Fisher Thornton who
traveled from Portland, Oregon especially to join them on this trip.
Some of the highlights were visits to the rain and cloud forests,
and a riverboat trip where they were able to cross briefly into
Nicaragua. The flowers and scenery were beautiful and they enjoyed
seeing different species of animals, even the monkeys who sometimes
seemed a bit too familiar with the tourists. One night while dining,
they spotted a couple and their three children wearing Black Dog
tee shirts. After speaking with them, they discovered they are summer
residents of West Chop.
Aimee Blood of Oak Bluffs and her mother Ann Blood of Edgartown
will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston
on May 14 and 15. They are taking on this personal challenge inspired
by their friends and relatives who are breast cancer survivors and
their friends who fought valiantly, but lost the battle. All participants
are required to raise a minimum of $1,800 each but they are aiming
higher with a team goal of $ 3,800. To help them reach their fundraising
goal, you can donate online at www.avonwalk.org or send a check
for Avon Walk for Breast Cancer to the Bloods at P.O. Box 138, West
Tisbury, MA 02575.
Diane and Paul Claussen spent the month of March in St. Augustine,
Fla. and have now returned to their Oak Bluffs home. Diane also
spent some time in Medford with her daughter Kirsten Hodges who
is recovering from illness.
Congratulations to Arthur Bailow and Diane Sylvia who were married
on Sunday, April 3.
Hy Hoffman and his son Steven recently returned from a trip abroad
where they traveled to Amsterdam and Paris.
We offer condolences to two Oak Bluffs families who lost loved ones
this past week. Our neighbor Larry Debettencourt passed away after
a brief illness. When we moved to this neighborhood eight years
ago, Larry was most welcoming, and we often admired the many shrubs,
flowers, and trees that he had planted in his yard over the years.
Frank Gibson will also be greatly missed by his wife Claire and
children, stepchildren, and grandchildren.
Dion Alley of South Carolina came for the day last Thursday, to
visit his parents Dennis and Megan and to visit with his grandmother
Elizabeth Alley.
Hooray for the Oak Bluffs School Volleyball team! They are the Island
champions. Coach Jeannie Holenko and her assistant Rebecca Geary
are very proud of their team.
Students at the school have an opportunity to name the new Oak Bluffs
Emergency Response boat. The Oak Bluffs Emergency Management Committee
will chose a name from those submitted by students. The contest
ends at noon on May 6.
We send Birthday smiles to Sarah Neubert who celebrated on April13
and to Vivian Surprenant who turned three years old this week.
Don't forget to vote today, and enjoy your week.
