Welcome, Safe Haven campers!

A group of youngsters whose lives are affected by AIDS arrive on the Island tomorrow afternoon for the annual Safe Haven camp. Children from several states will enjoy a week of fun Island activities including fishing, arts and crafts, field trips, special meals and celebrations, and much more. The camp, which is entering its 11th season, operates largely thanks to the generosity of individual Islanders and local groups and businesses that contribute in a number of ways to ensure a joyful experience for the youngsters. Tony Lombardi, a special education teacher at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, oversees the camp.

Scholarships available

It's time to think about summer camps for children. IMP, All Things Theater is offering partial scholarships for Island families who qualify.

Thanks to a generous grant for the Martha's Vineyard Cultural Council, IMP is able to make the theater camp available to more children. For information on the camp or the scholarships, call Donna Swift at 508-939-9368. Applications must be submitted by May 1 for this summer.

Artist's work in NYC show

Watercolor artist Ann M. Howes of West Tisbury will have her painting “Almost Ready” in the American Watercolor Society's 138th annual exhibition in New York City.

The show opened on April 5 and runs through May 1 at the Salmagundi Club on Fifth Avenue, just north of Washington Square. Over 1,400 entries from around the world were juried by the 400-member society for which only 100 were chosen for the exhibit. This is the third time Ms. Howes's work has been accepted into the exhibit.

Locally, her work can be seen at the Artisans Shows at the Grange Hall all summer and at Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown.

Another weight loss tool

Tomorrow Dr. Andrew Mincy will be at the Vineyard Assembly of God in Vineyard Haven to discuss the weight management book “The Maker's Diet” by Jordan S. Rubin. The 40-day plan is broken down into three phases and emphasizes both the physical and the emotional sides of weight loss.

“Are you looking for a health plan that is biblically based?” asks Mr. Rubin. According to him the Maker's Diet, among other things, will boost your immune system, maintain your ideal weight, promote more energy, and reduce stress.

The free seminar, which begins at 7 pm, will explain the diet in detail. For more information, call 508-696-7576.

Come back little Sheba or Sam

Have you been avoiding the library because you have overdue materials? Did you lose a book or video? Fear no more. Amnesty has been decreed.

In honor of National Library Week (April 10–16) the Oak Bluffs Public Library is offering a free ride, no fines through April 23.

Look under the bed, between the sofa cushions, in the trunk of your car, or anywhere else library books may be hiding. The books want to go home to the library, so just bring ‘em back.

Use the Oak Bluffs library fear-free.
