"What's the matter with kids today?" Nothing!
April 14, 2005

By Anna Marie D'Addarie

"Telephone Hour" tied up the phone lines in Sweet Apple, Ohio with the news of Hugo and Kim going steady. (From left to right) Ken Handy, Anna Hayes, and Kelly McCarron.

"We love you, Conrad" sang the members of the Conrad Birdie Fan Club as they kept vigil outside his window. (From left to right front) Jessica Willoughby, Erin Gosson, Michaella Gaines, Kristen Parece, and Jill McHugh (behind).

"Put on a happy face" sings Albert Peterson (Jerome Pikor) to a sad Birdie fan (Kelly McCarron).

Albert Peterson (Jerome Pikor) canšt say no to his mother Mae (Whitney O'Brien).
“Bye, Bye Birdie” was performed at the Edgartown School last weekend to large, appreciative crowds. The high-energy show featured solid performances from the lead characters, the chorus backing them up with singing, dancing, and fun.

Betsy Hauck directed the students with an eye toward telling a good story. We wanted Rosie (Arielle Wannamaker) to succeed and we couldn't wait for Albert Peterson (Jerome Pikor) to tell his mother Mae (Whitney O'Brien) to “Go home.” When that moment came, applause and cheers came up from the audience.

Even an opening night glitch like a phone that didn't ring on cue couldn't shake Ms. Wannamaker, who never broke character when someone from the pit made a ringing sound. Ms. Wannamaker, showing excellent stage training, picked up the cue and went right on with the scene as though nothing had happened.

The two young sweethearts, Kim (Phoebe Kelleher), and Hugo (Shane Schofield), have moments of discord but you know they will live happily ever after.

Kim's family life is thrown into a tizzy when Conrad Birdie (Mike McCarthy) shows up for a publicity stunt - he is going to kiss Kim on the Ed Sullivan Show. Mr. Macafee (Richard McAuliffe) is the long-suffering father of a teenage girl and a son Randolph (Alex Jernegan). Poor Randolph keeps getting dismissed whenever he speaks, and dad just doesn't understand what's happening around him.

Mae Petterson is Albert's overbearing mother and the part is meant to be played full-out. Ms. O'Brien did just that, using her voice and gestures to bully everyone. Mae doesn't succeed in getting her way, but not from lack of trying.

All the students in the musical seemed to be having fun and their energy flowed out to the audience, making for a fun night in the theater for everyone.
