Music
Off-beat
in the off-season
April
28, 2005
By Julian Wise
The wave of
offbeat alternative music in the off-season continues to crest
with a pair of intriguing shows in late April.
Aboveground Records plays host to Sir Richard Bishop, a member
of the The Sun City Girls, the legendary psychedelic trio who
sold out the Paradise in Boston several months ago. Mr. Bishop
runs the eclectic Sublime Frequencies record label, which releases
obscure music from around the planet. He is also a rare and collectible
book dealer in his spare time. His recent solo album, Improvika,
is on the Chicago label Locust Music, home to recordings by poets
and avant garde thinkers like Timothy Leary and Allan Ginsburg.
Locust is also the home for groundbreaking independent music acts
Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Matmos, and Keith Fullerton.
Mr. Bishop has garnered the attention of guitar legend John Fahey,
who released Bishop's first solo album Salvador Kali
on Fahey's own Revenant Records label. Local teen act Coyote opens
the show.
The trio Gretel stops by Offshore Ale to promote their debut album
Unreturnable Dirt. Gretel members Reva Williams (vocals,
guitar), Phil DuPertuis (bass, guitar) and Melissa Myers (keyboards)
met on Martha's Vineyard two years ago and are currently embarking
on a tour of the east coast and the midwest. Their songs are characterized
by raw honesty as they explore disappointment, denial, love, and
faith. The eclectic compositions defy easy genre categorization,
though strains of folk and alternative country course through
their work. Within the framework of an individual song, the harmonies
and melodies might transit from gospel choirs to digital pulses.
The band paints from a broad palette and is fearless about working
in bold strokes.
Gretel plays offshore Ale on April 30 at 10 pm.
Sir Richard Bishop and Coyote perform at Aboveground Records at
the Triangle on May 2 at 6:45 pm. The all-ages show is free. Donations
are welcome.
