I apologize if I missed anyone's last-minute news this weekend. I
made my first trip off-Island alone with Riley and Amelia this weekend
and I wasn't home to catch up on Island news. We, however, had quite
the adventure, going to Build a Bear and The Disney Store on Saturday
night and horse shopping on Sunday. My sister Pam and her daughter
Evie joined us on our excursions. We checked out a number of horses
in Western Massachusetts, but so far we haven't found the perfect
horse for us. But we all got to ride a few horses, see some beautiful
country, and have a lot of fun. It was a great way to spend the weekend.
I received great news from the Morgan family. Bob Morgan has finally
been moved to the Spalding Rehab affiliate over in Sandwich. He is
doing well and would love to have visitors, so please make a point
of seeing him if you get the chance. Bob's doctors think it's the
best treatment for him!
Joe Alosso wants to remind everyone that the first household hazardous
waste collection will be on May 21 from 9 am until noon at the Edgartown
Wastewater Treatment Facility. The other dates for the year are July
16, August 20 and October 15.
Buddy & Gloria Sylvia spent some time vacationing in Myrtle Beach
and visited friends and former Islanders Paul and Kathy Rancourt.
They had a great time being with their friends and relaxing away from
home for awhile.
Susan Henley e-mailed me that she and husband John are back in business
in Edgartown. Henley's Needlepoint & Fibers is located at 44 Main
St., behind Edgartown Books, and will be offering needlepoint canvases,
fibers for needle art, classes and various other services. Best of
all, they will be open year-round. Welcome back.
The Edgartown Council on Aging is offering lots of interesting events
this month. On May 6, a workshop with attorney Pat Mello entitled
Elder Law Essentials will take place at 10 am. This workshop will
address wills, living trusts, and health care proxies. On May 13,
Ms. Mello will offer free individual appointments as well. Also on
May 13, the Older Americans Month Breakfast for men and women begins
at 8 am. At 9 am, Tim Walsh, the director of the hospital, will speak
about future plans and services. On May 19, there will be a cooking
class where you can learn to make Tuscan bread, foccacia, and pizza
dough, all from one recipe. Please call the ECOA for more information.
On a sad note, former Edgartown resident Paul David Corwin was in
a car accident last week in Maine, where he now lives with his family.
He was driving at night when he accidentally struck a horse that had
bolted out in front of him. According to police, it was a freak accident
that simply couldn't be avoided. Paul survived but is pretty banged
up, with facial fractures, broken ribs, and some brain injuries. For
now, he is in a hospital in Bangor, Me., but will probably be heading
to Boston soon to begin reconstructive surgery. If you would like
to send a card or want to be kept up to date, give me a call.
It's a short column this week. I'm still off-Island tonight with the
kids, and they are quite a handful. I'm finding hard to type and chase
them too! Have a great week. Remember Mother's Day is Sunday.
