The Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center has come upon a sweet way to teach Hebrew school students about Passover - a Chocolate Seder!

Traditional seder plate items were cleverly replaced with appropriate chocolatey substitutes at the evening service last Wednesday - bitter herbs were swapped for dark chocolate; a chocolate egg stood in for the chicken egg; the traditional lamb shank was represented by a chocolate covered banana; strawberries and green M&Ms took the place of fresh greens.

The young participants enjoyed saying the blessing for bread over Chilmark Chocolate's famous chocolate covered matzah, drinking chocolate milk (instead of wine), and reading from the Chocolate Haggadah: the text that explains why each item is eaten during the ceremony. Most importantly, the fun experience reinforced their understanding of the meaning and reason for the Passover Seder.

To quote the text: “[The Chocolate Seder] captures the essence of the story of Passover in a melt-in-your-mouth sort of way.”
