OAK BLUFFS
May 5, 2005

By Megan Alley - 508-693-0850 - meganislandmegan@verizon.net

Walk for housing. The third annual “House Walk,” sponsored by Habitat For Humanity of Martha's Vineyard, will be held on Saturday, May 7. The walk is not only fun but raises money towards the goal of building two homes on Martha's Vineyard this year. Even with volunteer labor and donated materials, it still costs $75,000 to build each house. Both adult and student volunteers are welcome with their projects.

Check out the new Oak Bluffs School Library media center web site at http://www.oakbluffs.mvk12.ma.us. It is new and offers links to online reference sources, children's book award winners, homework help centers, and more.

Last week I mentioned the daffodils at Niantic Park and I received further information this week regarding additional groups responsible for this springtime show. In addition to the town departments, we must also thank the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, which chose the park for a project to help this community. Not only did they donate funds for and plant 1,000 daffodil bulbs, but they also helped fund the new equipment there. The Farm Neck Foundation also gave some monies as well. Thanks to all for providing such a pleasing scene.

By the way, the Rotary Club is very active on Martha's Vineyard, with around 70 members from all Island towns. They meet once a week for lunch and hold fundraising events here. One hundred percent of the funds they raise are given out to charities each year. Check out the club's web site at mvrotary.com.

The PTO has been very busy as they are finishing up the renovations of the grades one through five playground and have now started on the kindergarten one. It would be impossible without the help of so many volunteers, so keep checking in for the date to come and help complete this project.

New baby Paige Elizabeth Alley greeted her parents Dion and Debra Alley and her two Charleston, S.C., brothers Sam and Benjamin on April 27. Oak Bluffs grandparents are Megan and Dennis Alley and Paige's great-grandmother is Elizabeth Alley.

The Library Friends have begun working on another cookbook and are again soliciting recipes. They would like to include a section of ethnic recipes, so check out that old family recipe and share it with them. You may either pick up a form at the desk at the library or submit recipes at their e-mail address: oblibraryfriends@yahoo.com

We hold special memories of K.J. and Deebo at this time, sending love to their parents and hoping all teens will truly honor and respect these two special guys by continuing to “buckle up”.

How could we have forgotten to send a big Birthday Smile to Mark Baird on April 19 and we send another to grandson Marques Rivers who will celebrate on May 10.

And get-well wishes go out to kindergartner Ben deBettencourt who broke his arm in his

enthusiastic attempt to follow the antics of his older sister.

A new offering at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center is a Needlepoint Calendar group that is held on Tuesdays at 9 am. This class is under the leadership of Nada Metell and you may register by calling the senior center at 693-4509. The Friends of the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging want you to know that their meeting is at 1 pm on Thursday, May 12 not on May 19 as was previously announced.

Remember to send your news my way and enjoy your week.
