SHORT SUBJECTS
May 5, 2005

Peter Simon on the air

After an 18-month absence, Chilmark resident Peter Simon’s popular radio show, “Private Collection,” will be aired every Thursday, 7 to 9 pm, on WUMB-FM (91.9), a public radio station based at University of Massachusetts. Mr. Simon hosted the show on WMVY for five years.

The premiere show will be aired tonight, May 5, featuring songs and discussions about Mother’s Day. Joining Peter in the studio will be Vineyard favorite, Kate Taylor, who will play two songs live, including a catchy country rocker “Look at Granny Run.”

Mr. Simon focuses in on a particular theme or musical genre each week, with intriguing commentary too. Much of the music comes from his extensive personal archives. He features all types of music, calling his show “free-form,” and emphasizes folk/rock/reggae and songs with political, social, or spiritual content.

Pontiff’s plays

The Vineyard Playhouse presents a special reading of Plays of the Pope, written by Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II. As a young man, the late Pope was an actor and playwright; he continued to write plays even as a bishop.

Joann Green Breuer, artistic associate of the playhouse, has chosen scenes from five of his plays. The readers include Rabbi Caryn Broitman and Father Michael Nagle, along with actors from the Island theatre community.

After the reading, there will be a brief discussion with the audience, followed by refreshments in the lobby.

Plays of the Pope, Wednesday, May 11, 7:30 pm, at the playhouse on Church Street in Vineyard Haven. Admission is free. 508-693-6450.

Photo show opens

For the month of May, JJ Gonson and Anthony Saffery will be showing new photographs at Mocha Motts in Oak Bluffs. Anthony is a music producer, primarily, but he has been taking photographs for many years. JJ has been taking pictures for more than 25 years, sometimes professionally. Currently she teaches black and white photography at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School and is a freelance photographer for The Times.

This collection of recent photographs from Martha’s Vineyard and the United Kingdom is the couple’s first showing since moving to the Island in 2001.

Houses from art

Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard is looking for donations of art for its third annual art auction. Your contribution will help Habitat raise money to build more houses on the Island.

Original art is needed for the live auction and any other items can be used in the silent auction. This year’s event will be held on Friday, May 27 at 7 pm at the Harbor View Hotel.

Fill your summer with song

Island Theatre Workshop is holding another round of auditions tonight at 7:30 pm for its summer show “The Gondoliers,” by Gilbert and Sullivan. The July production needs men and women of any age and beginners are encouraged to try out at the Federated Church Parish House on South Summer Street in Edgartown.

The show is directed by Lee Fierro and Peter Boak is the musical director. For more information, call 508-693-5290.
