Welcome home to Georgia Franklin. She is very happy to be back on-Island. She came home last weekend. She is recuperating after knee surgery a few weeks ago. We wish her a rapid recovery.

Douglas and Leslie Hewson hosted a party, complete with music and balloons, celebrating 20 years of Louis' on State Road. They had food and drinks and party cake. Everything was outdoors under the tent, even the marvelous Tisbury Inn Café [TIC] rolls. Louis Giordano was there to make the party complete. The celebration was also in honor of Doug's 40th birthday, with family and friends filling out the crowd. The Hewsons plan to reopen the Mediterranean restaurant on the Beach Road before Memorial Day.

Marie Allen will be at the Bunch of Grapes on Friday at 7:30 pm to talk about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NAACP). Marie is the new president of the Martha's Vineyard chapter. Donald Mayhew will join her to discuss the history of the NAACP here as well as the goals and activities on the Island.

I like the idea of having a hospital available when we need it. I usually prefer to think of it in the abstract. When I needed it, I was very happy with the reality.

I was surprised when I needed emergency treatment and then surgery. Thanks to the expertise of the hospital surgical staff and the doctors and nurses, I am doing very well now. Warm get well wishes came in the form of lots of pretty cards and notes as well as lovely flowers and telephone calls from as far away as England and New Zealand. Each and every one of these has helped a lot, and I am recuperating nicely. Never underestimate the value of a cheerful card for someone who needs a lift. Thank you all.

The first annual library street fair was a grand success last year. This name has already caused some confusion, so I am trying to make it clear from the start. This is not the Tisbury Street Fair, which is held in July. This is the Vineyard Haven Library street fair. Plans are underway for the second one to be held on Sunday, June 12, at the library from 1 to 4 pm. What can make it better? More books, of course. To donate books, call Elaine 508-693-7614. A new table will also offer antiques and collectibles. For table space, call Clara at 508-693-9439.

Pre-schoolers aged 3 to 5 will try Yoga and Creative Movement with Jennifer Lyonnais at the Library on Tuesday, May 17, at 11 am. Story times during the week of May 24 will be about butterflies. All ages are welcome to Family Games Night on Thursday, May 19, at 6 pm.

The Martha's Vineyard Film Society shows “Before Sunset” (R) Sunday, 8 pm, at Katharine Cornell. According to Ty Burr in The Boston Globe: “It's a movie to cheer lovers and movie lovers alike - an enchanting midsummer cocktail for two, served at dusk on the banks of the Seine.”

Joy Stuart Bergstrom will talk about “Pendulum Dowsing and Kahuna Magic.” Take a minute and read that title again. This fascinating talk will take place on Monday at 2 pm at the Tisbury Senior Center. You can learn to connect with your inner self. Learn about “Huna,” the ancient philosophy of the Hawaiian people. Find out more about this interesting history and culture and have fun as Joy leads you in swinging a pendulum. The theme is Hawaiian, so music from Maui and refreshments will follow the program. Call 508-693-4205 to reserve your seat. There is no charge.

The next Household Hazardous Waste Collection is on Saturday, May 21, from 9 to noon at the Edgartown Wastewater Treatment Facility. The manager Joe Alosso says, “This is our 17th year hosting this, and we're very pleased at the level of participation. It says a lot about how we feel about our environment.” You can bring household and cesspool cleaners, insect and garden sprays, primers and shellac, turpentine and varnish, oil based paint and thinners, auto oil and brake fluid. Don't bring latex paint, fire extinguishers, or explosives.

Happy anniversary today to Craig and Laura Mayhew. WMVY celebrates its birthday all month.

Heard on Main Street: “Dance like nobody's watching.”
