Following a rainy
weekend, this morning is sunny with blue skies overhead. Flowers are
everywhere, forsythia never more blatant, cherry blossoms, magnolias,
bleeding hearts, primroses, quince, and honesty. Ann Burt's daffodils
are blooming in abundance along both banks of the runnel behind her
house. And the violets, of course.
The violet story from last week's column prompted many comments. Christa
Fischer told me she has a similarly lovely lawn full of violets (hers
are mostly purple), which she gives to children in May baskets, with
the admonishment to ask your parents first before planting
them. She reports that her violets are spreading happily all over
town.
There were gatherings over the weekend for us to pay our respects
and say goodbye to two West Tisbury residents. The family and friends
of Leonard Athearn assembled at the Ag Hall Saturday afternoon; on
Sunday, many of the same were at the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center
attending a service for Bob Blum. Truly celebrations of their lives,
both occasions were highlighted by reminiscences, gratitude, and a
comfortable sharing of the spirit of both men.
Michael and Karen Colaneri are thrilled to have a new grandson, Christopher
Michael Bonneau, son of Sara and Mark Bonneau of Barrington, R.I.
Christopher has two older brothers, Nicholas and Ryan. Proud great-grandmothers
are Hazel Colaneri and Natalie Goethals. Christopher will be introduced
to the Vineyard this summer. We all look forward to meeting him.
Diane Wall, her daughters Hilary and Tessa, and her mother, Florence
Paul, attended the Broadway premiere of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
at the Hilton Theater in New York City. A very fancy party followed
for the cast and guests. Our West Tisbury contingent was dressed-up
for the occasion, but not like the theater glitterati. Diane said
they all had a wonderful time and enjoyed the play, the party, and
being in New York.
The cast of the WIMP/IMP production this Friday and Saturday evenings
includes several actors from West Tisbury. Performances are at the
Katharine Cornell Theater at 7 pm.
Steve Murphy celebrated his birthday on April 27 with a visit from
his children, Steve Jr., Ted, and Sarah. They all arrived at Hearthstone
on Golden Pond in Hopkinton, where Steve Sr. has been living this
past winter. We all hope he will be back at his home on Music Street
for the summer, with all the children, grandchildren, and golden retrievers.
For all of us who walk at Lambert's Cove Beach, the disappearance
of Mohu has been a puzzlement. I asked our building inspector, Ernie
Mendenhall, what happened? He said that the house was torn down. There
are no plans to rebuild it. It was such a rambling vision of summer
life on the old Vineyard, a house that fit into its spot,
comfortable and comforting.
The library has officially moved out of the Music Street Annex. Our
party and silent auction on Saturday afternoon raised some money for
the library and minimized the amount of furniture we had to move.
The building will become the temporary police station sometime this
week.
The weather is so beautiful it is hard to decide what to do first.
Take Tallulah for a walk, get out and paint, or work in the garden.
All lovely choices. It's great to feel the sunshine. Enjoy your week.
