As I write this, Mother's Day is drawing to a close,
my first Mother's Day without my mom. It was an odd sort of day, from
the weather to the various events that filled our time, and brought
with it the true meaning of the word bittersweet. I worried all week
and stressed about how difficult the day would be without Buzzy around.
And it turned out to be not so bad. I shared breakfast in bed, a magnificent
feast of bagels, cream cheese, and orange juice, with Riley and Amelia,
and then moved furniture and cleaned. Not your typical celebration
but satisfying nonetheless. Then, after a birthday party for our friend
Oliver Saffery, newly anointed to the four-year-old club, we lavished
a little mother's day affection on Nana Shirley Craig. I returned
home to finish moving furniture and cleaning. And when I thought of
my mom, it was a memory of the good times and laughter that we so
often shared over the silliest things. She was a woman with a great
sense of humor and a great deal of wisdom. And while I miss her every
day, I realized today that I still feel her with me, even though she
isn't here.
I owe Cathy Rancourt an apology for spelling her name wrong last week.
As her friends all know, she spells her name with a C and not a K.
Sorry, Cathy.
Ann Tyra has officially left her post as the Director of the Edgartown
Library. She has served the town well for a number of years and we
will miss her wit and wisdom on our visits to the library. We wish
her luck and happiness and some relaxation in all her future endeavors.
The Edgartown Ferry Chappy III should be back in service by the end
of the week, which I know will make Chappy residents happy! This will
lessen the long waiting lines to a certain extent. But then again,
I'm hearing a lot about the return of piping plovers and beach closings,
so those lines may not shorten much after all.
Thanks to everyone who has asked about my cousin, Paul Corwin, following
his accident last week. He is doing pretty well and is currently home
waiting for the next step in the recovery process. It will be a long
road for him, but he is up to the challenge.
Our deepest condolences go out the Neil Patt and his family for the
loss of wife, mother, and grandmother, Elaine Patt on Sunday morning.
Elaine was always a familiar face around town, enjoying parties at
Phil and Shirley's, or Gen Prada's, and sharing the Fourth of July
parade festivities alongside us. She will be deeply missed by all
who knew her.
Remember the Rainbow Run will be Saturday morning at 9 am. The kids
of the Rainbow Place, each with a parent, will run the course, from
the Edgartown Yacht Club parking lot to the Old Whaling Church. It
is very cute and worth watching, even if you don't have a child involved.
I hope everyone has a great week. Have some fun and share your news!
