On Sunday evening as I am writing this column, I am feeling rather like a foreign correspondent as I am writing it from beautiful Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C. I arrived here Friday night to spend five days visiting with my Son and daughter-in-law, Dion and Debra Alley, and their family here - Sam, Ben and newborn Paige Elizabeth - and to attend grandson Ben's first communion. I hesitate to tell you that the weather here has been in the seventies with sunny blue skies as reports from the Island tell me that a nor'easter has battered our beautiful Island of Martha's Vineyard since Saturday.

In spite of the inclement weather, the first Communion celebration and also the Confirmation ceremony went on as scheduled on Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church for the Good Shepherd Parish with parents, relatives, and friends proudly watching as the children received these rites.

Diane and Paul Claussen held a Mother's Day party on Saturday evening. There was a double reason to celebrate as their daughter Kirsten Hodges along with husband Brad and their baby Will were here for a visit. Kirsten is recovering well from a serious illness and the family was so grateful to be back together under such happy circumstances.

Several people have now arrived back at their Oak Bluffs homes for the summer. Among them are Dorris Williams who is here at her Eastside Road home from her winter home in Maryland and Ron and Carol Conte at their Lagoon home for the summer.

Lou Healey spent last week in Sagamore Beach to help grandson Colin David McNamee celebrate his first birthday. Colin is the son of Mary and Bruce McNamee and is also the grandson of the late David Healey.

Caroline Lucas is at her new home on Webb Ave. and her sisters Heather, Allyson, and their children arrived for the first time to visit with Caroline in her new home.

Under the small world department: While waiting in the airport terminal (I think it was the Washington, D.C. one) on my trip down, I saw a familiar Island face. It was Betty Daniels on her way to Ohio to attend her grandson's graduation. We managed to chat for a while until her plane was called for boarding.

Oak Bluffs School sixth grader Emma Forbes is one of six students whose artwork, which is titled “Fireworks,” was chosen for the cover of this year's edition of the Island Book phone directory. Congratulations to her and the other winners.

If you have a child with NLD, Apergers, or any learning disability, and are interested in getting together with other parents, please plan on attending a meeting at 6:30 pm at the Edgartown School Library on Wed., May 18. Diane Guest of Vineyard Nutrition will speak and a parent meeting will follow. For more information, call Melissa Pitt at 508-627-6040.

A double thank you goes to the PTO from the staff of the Oak Bluffs School for the incredible display of food, treats, gifts, and general goodness during teacher appreciation week. The PTO in return was overwhelmed by the donations of food, and all of the baking, cooking, and serving by the parents and friends of the school, and the generosity of many Island businesses who donated wonderful gifts to present to the staff.

We send birthday smiles to Will Farrissey on May 12 followed by Heidi Jardin on May 18, and friend Kay Manning who will party on May 24. Anniversary flowers go to Kathy and Andy Farrissey on May 18.

My apologies to anyone who might have e-mailed me news as when I tried to access my e-mail remotely, I discovered to my dismay that my computer is once again displaying only an error message. Hopefully, when I return I will be able to get it up online again.

Enjoy your week as the weather is supposed to be better, and do send your news along to me.
