If you weren't there, you really missed some good photographs. Ted
Hewett was the speaker at the Neighborhood Convention last week. His
topic was the Stained Glass Art of Frederick Wilson. Wilson was Ted's
grandfather, who worked as a designer for the Louis Comfort Tiffany
studio. Tiffany did not have artists sign their work, and the Tiffany
Studio owned the designs that were created.
Edward Wilson was born in Dublin and immigrated to Philadelphia in
1858. He was creating designs for Tiffany from 1895 through the 1920s.
He did not work with the stained glass, but drew what was called the
cartoon for the window.
Appropriately, this session was held at Grace Episcopal Church. The
Resurrection window over the altar at Grace Church was made by Tiffany
and appears to be derived from one of Frederick Wilson's designs.
There are two Tiffany windows at St. Andrew's Church in Edgartown
that Ted Hewett has reason to believe were also made from his grandfather
Wilson's designs.
That was some storm last weekend. On Saturday there was surf in the
inner harbor, an unusual sight any time of year. The wind was whipping
up the whitecaps, making all the boats dance around wildly. The rain
stripped blossoms off many trees and bushes. I am happy to report
that there are many remaining buds and blossoms that are now bravely
flourishing.
All the signs of spring are here. Fish sandwiches are available at
John's Fish Market. The parking lot at Cronig's State Road Market
is practically floating in daffodils. Once again you can get your
lobster rolls at Grace Church on Friday nights. The access to the
church was a little difficult last week because the town was paving
Main Street late in the afternoon. Tomorrow you can drive over a smooth
new road.
The Yes Men will be shown at 8 pm on Saturday at Katharine
Cornell Theatre. This film follows Andy and Mike, two regular guys
who pretend to be corporate bigwigs to expose powerful corporate evil
doing and have a bit of fun in the process. This R-rated film is brought
to you by the Martha's Vineyard Film Society.
Friends of Betsy Edge will be sorry to hear of the loss of her mother,
June. June was a frequent visitor to the Island.
Marianne Goldsmith invites all animal lovers to attend a special dedication
to our most infallible friends. A Blessing of the Animals
service will be held at 11 am on Sunday at Owen Park. This celebration
of our beloved pets will be hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Society
of Martha's Vineyard. Children are welcome. All pets must be restrained.
Marianne says that her husband calls their five-year-old chocolate
lab the best person he has ever known. It seems appropriate
to hold a special service to bless such animals. In case of rain,
the service will be held at the Unitarian Church at 238 Main Street.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Skip Petersen.
On Saturday, wish the very best to Brendan O'Neill, director of the
Vineyard Conservation Society. Monday is a special day for Jill Walsh.
Happy birthday to Glenna Moore who celebrates on Tuesday.
Heard on Main Street: Never mind the dog. Beware of the owner.
Heard on Main Street: Dance like nobody's watching.
