A hawk floating high above the trees like a master of the cosmos
is always cause for excited comment. Its the ultimate symbol
of natures power, something we acknowledge in an abstract
sort of way. But when a hawk paused on a low branch of a poplar
near the house last weekend, it all became a little less abstract,
even fearsome. What did it see that we didnt? We have no chickens,
and its early for baby birds, isnt it? Surely field
mice are too plentiful to be tempting. We can only assume he knows
what hes doing. And stay inside until he takes to the skies
again.
Alan Brigish, West Tisbury photojournalist, will show close-ups
of the wild life in Botswana during a talk at the library next Wednesday,
May 25, at 5:30 pm. Botswana is dramatic territory way off the beaten
tourist track, and Mr. Brigish is a dramatic speaker. There is no
admission charge, and everyone is welcome. The Wednesday evening
talks are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Margaret Penicaud was scheduled to speak at a potluck at the church
earlier this week on fish farms in Haiti, a subject dear to her
heart. A Jeremy Mayhew video showed on-site close-ups of the project.
The childrens room at the library was the setting for a portion
of a video being filmed last weekend by Nora Laudini and her crew.
Film-making has taken hold in Chilmark and is attracting many people
of all ages.
There will be a memorial service at The Yard for Greta Ghee, former
president and board member of The Yard, on Saturday, May 28 starting
at 3 pm.
Welcome back to Louis Becker, who has started his fourth summer
as a seasonal assistant at the library.
In preparation for the coming season, a clean-up crew has been at
work at the Middle Road site of the churchs summer flea market.
Phyllis Conway reports that there are still a few spaces available
for anyone selling items suitable for a country flea market. To
reserve space, call her at 508-645-9216. The first flea market will
be Saturday, June 25.
Money-raising efforts for the churchs mission work have been
going along on schedule for the last few months. The money goes
to Tsunami relief and for health kits, among other projects.

you.
