This has certainly been a Marthas Vineyard Spring. Just as
the sun begins to warm us up a bit down comes the rain for a few
days. It is kind of like being a Red Sox fan youre
either riding high or being dropped to the ground. I guess if we
didnt have the rain we wouldnt truly appreciate the
sunshine!
If you want to enjoy warmth no matter what the weather is, go to
the COMSOG seedling sale at their greenhouse on New York Ave. where
its always warm. The sale will continue from 9 am to 1 pm
during the week and every weekend in May.
On the Friday before Mothers Day, Bobbie Ann Gibson received
the best gift of all. Her son Michael Gibson and her granddaughter
Daniella surprised her with an unannounced visit all the way from
Florida. Daniella had made her First Communion in Florida the week
before. On Mothers Day they were joined by Bobbie Anns
brother, Nelson Amaral, and his family for brunch at Farm Neck.
What a special day it was for all of them. Michael and Daniella
left on Monday to return to their home in Florida.
The board of directors of the Friends of Oak Bluffs met recently
at Estelle Surprenants home to plan the annual downtown beautification
before Memorial Day. This group has accomplished many successful
projects working with the highway and park departments since the
early 1970s. Anyone who would like to help plant flowers is invited
to meet at the Mall at 8 am on May 26. Rain dates are May 27 or
28. The Friends meet the first Wednesday of each month,
except July and August, at Estelles and anyone interested
in the groups work is invited to attend or call one of the
directors.
A brief reminder to everyone that the first Household hazardous
Waste Collection this year will be on Sat., May 21 from 9 am to
12 noon at the Edgartown Wastewater Treatment Facility. Can you
believe that this is the 17th year of Edgartowns hosting this
facility? By the level of participation, it is quite obvious how
Island residents feel about protecting our environment. Remaining
collection dates on this years schedule are: July 16, Aug.
20, and Oct. 15. Mark your calendars!
Kids Day at Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs will be held this Sunday,
May 22 from 11 am to 1 pm. Ribbon cutting will be at 11:30 am. Niantic
Park is next to the tennis courts and senior center. There will
be free hot dogs, refreshments and balloons. Come have some fun
and check out the new playground equipment. This fun event is sponsored
by
Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard. The rain date is Sunday, May 29.
Congratulations to Oak Bluffs seventh grader Taylor Hughes who was
recently accepted to participate as a People To People Student Ambassador
representing Marthas Vineyard and the Oak Bluffs School. Taylor
will travel to Australia and New Zealand this summer to take part
in a 20-day cultural exchange where she will meet and work with
other students and government officials, take part in educational
activities, and stay with a host family.
The VTA is issuing student bus passes. They are only being sold
at the Island schools as they are valid for Island students only.
For further info, contact the VTA at 693-9440.
The school and the P.E. Department are in need of 10 to 15 adult
volunteers to join in the fun and help out with the annual Field
Day on June 20. If you have the energy and enthusiasm, please contact
Deb Brown or Kathy Perrotta at the Oak Bluffs School.
I have a correction to the birthday list of last week. It wasnt
Will Farrisseys birthday on May 12 (but you may keep the smile
we sent to you, Will). But it was Wells Moreiss. So we send
a belated birthday smile to him and we still have birthday smiles
left to send one along to Della Hardman who will celebrate on May
20.
Last Saturday at 9 am a memorial service was held for Ed Krikorian
at the Marthas Vineyard Airport. The service was held at the
site of the plaque that was placed there recently in memory of the
two men, Donald Goodwin and Richard Holden, who lost their lives
during an accident there. Ed was one of the soldiers there who helped
recover them from the tank where they were killed. Among those approximately
20 people present, were Eds widow, Shirley Krikorian, David
Cronig, Bill Tilton and veteran Hector Asselin. During the service,
the airport fire truck was stationed behind the plaque, spraying
a stream of water, and the flag was lowered to half-mast where it
remained for 24 hours. Those present remarked that it was a most
moving and well-deserved ceremony.
Please send your news along, but remember my deadline is noon on
Monday. Enjoy your week
