Art show for good cause
Family Planning of Marthas Vineyards annual art show,
sale, and opening party is a bright highlight of every Memorial Day
weekend. The 16th annual show opens with a benefit gala on Thursday,
May 26, and continues through Sunday, May 29. This years gala,
always a great opportunity to socialize and celebrate the new art
season, promises to be more fun than ever, with hors doeuvres
by Park Corner Bistro and upbeat music by DJ Diana.
With recent changes in government funding, Family Planning needs strong
local support to enable it to continue serving growing community needs.
Offering high quality work by dozens of local artists, the show is
an important fundraiser for this worthy agency.

New plays by Island writers
The Vineyard Playhouse is presenting Island Interludes, a series
of staged readings of new plays by Island writers. Four different
works will be presented over the next two weekends, May 20 and 21
and May 27 and 28 at the Church Street theatre.
On Friday, May 20, 8 pm, Devorah Medwin will read Just One
Maggie. George Ricci will read a memory play, Le Mani Del
Padre on Saturday, May 21 at 7:30 pm.
Volare, a monologue on life, death, shadows and Naples,
Italy will be performed by Cleonice Niki Patton on Friday, May 27
at 8 pm. The final reading will be Saturday, May 28, 7:30 pm, a
romantic comedy by Lydia P. Bruce and Andrew S. Burns titled The
Heart of Art.
Each reading will be followed by a short Q & A session. Admission
is $5 and the seating is general admission. For more information

Dancing by the Yard
This weekend the artists-in-residence will perform at The Yard in
Chilmark. The two dance performances will include work by guest
choreographer Adam Hougland with dancers Lindsay Clark, Andrew Cowan,
Richard Decker, Kristen Foote, Alice Holland, Melana Lloyd, Domicic
Santia, and Paul Singh. The artists are part of the six-week Patricia
N. Nanon Residency.
Artistic director Lois Welk will offer a pre-concert talk about
the program.
Performances are Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21, at 8:30 pm.

new revolution
Tonight, May 19, at 6 pm at the Vineyard Haven Public Library the
film The Next Industrial Revolution: The Birth of the Sustainable
Economy will be shown. Narrated by Susan Sarandon and developed
by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, the film is about the
relationship between commerce and nature. Free.
Live poetry broadcast
On Friday, May 27 at 3 pm there will be a one-hour poetry reading
on MVTV. Poets will read one poem each and if time permits read
another until the hour is filled.
