“Sweetwater” is the choice of the Library Book Club this week. They gather today at 1 pm to discuss this book by Roxana Robinson. She is also the author of “This Is My Daughter.”

Some people complain that their yards in spring are full of frisky little bunnies. I would gladly swap. We have great gallumphing turkeys. They have long claws (you can see the results on our deck). They make an awful mess (look at the cars and the sidewalk). They are also awfully noisy, especially this time of year. The toms swell up their chests, fluff up their feathers, strum up their tail feathers, and squawk loudly to catch the eye of the hens. The hens keep right on feeding or doing whatever they were doing. Then the tom gets absolutely perverse, he strums until he is actually blue in the face. Then he squawks some more in case the hens haven’t noticed. This is particularly annoying at 5 am. Anyone want to swap some cute quiet little bunnies for these noisy fellows?

Spring brings new paint and new places. The Beach House has expanded with a bigger and better and prettier “back room” now featuring bags, bags, and more bags. The PacifiCotton-Bryn Walker building seems almost ready to open. The shop at the Norton Farm is going to be big and sturdy. The old one always seemed ready to blow down in a big wind.

Today I am celebrating my son’s birthday by attending a baseball game played by Washington, D.C.’s new National League team. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Lillian Hammond, Maura Ziemian, and Della Hardman. Judy and Allan Davey count their years together on Saturday. Their son Allan Davey and his wife Ann mark 13 years together on Monday, May 30. Happy anniversary to Bea and David Welch. They mark 58 happy years together on Monday.

Sunday is a special day for Elaine Ciancio and Patricia Nothnagle. The McKays’ grandchildren celebrate birthdays this month. Tuesday is the day for Shawn Townes and Leah Ellis, and Friday, May 27, is the day for Kylie Townes. Kristina Ivory also celebrates on Friday. Wish a happy one next Thursday, May 26, to Betsy Edge and Ann Haller. Birthday greetings go out on Saturday, May 28, to Steve Mussell and Cheryl Stark. Happy birthday to Jane Chandler on Sunday, May 29.

Probably the children’s march to the sea with flowers is the most touching program on our Island. Mark your calendar. About 1 pm on May 27, the Friday before Memorial Day, the Tisbury School children will parade to Owen Park to toss lilacs and other blossoms into the harbor.

Fly your flag on Monday, May 30, to honor all the veterans. Just show up if you can help with the Avenue of Flags in Oak Grove Cemetery that day. 400 flags go up at 7:30 am and then come down at 3 pm. They can really use your help with 400 flags, especially taking them down at 3 pm. Just show up. The parade starts at 9:45 am at the American Legion Hall down William Street into the Cemetery. All veterans, firemen, policemen, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts are welcome to join in the parade. A fly-over of two helicopters is planned at about 10:15 am.

Call Dana Nunes at 508-693-7562 for information on the Memorial Day town picnic on the grounds at the Tisbury Waterworks. This picnic is reserved for residents of Tisbury and their guests. The town picnic is from noon to 4. Bring your own picnic. Grills are provided. There will also be free ice cream and rowboats.

Heard on Main Street: “Laugh uncontrollably. It clears the mind.”
