This week is the reason I became a landscape painter. Seeing the shadbush blooming in the woods and along the roadsides just thrills me every spring, as ephemeral as a puff of air. In Connecticut we called them “shadblow.” They were not as plentiful there, more of a specimen tree, the most famous images being the photographic series by Captain Edward Steichen of Redding, Conn. He photographed one tree beside a pond on his property over many years and through many seasons. Wanting to look at those pictures again, I borrowed a book from the library yesterday, a new book about Captain Steichen written by his widow Joanna. She wrote that the shadblow tree died soon after the photographer did, but the record of its life remains.

I have just returned from a weekend in Connecticut, visiting with my family as we attended a memorial service for my Aunt Emma, who died at age 105 this past March. Connecticut spring was at its peak, very beautiful, and so I have the gift of two springs this year, as we are about two or three weeks behind. Our rhododendrons are just beginning, the dogwoods just starting, the lilacs still with tight buds.

On the boat going off, I ran into Ike Russell, who was also heading to Connecticut. He planned to attend his 55th reunion at the Kent School on Saturday. He was staying with his godfather, Pete Hart, in West Cornwall. Trudy, Ike felt wisely, had declined to accompany him, choosing to remain at home with their dogs, Polly and Katy.

Ann Howes was in New York City to attend the annual American Watercolor Society exhibition at the Salamagundi Club. She had a painting accepted in the exhibition and was elected as a full member of the AWS. It is quite an honor to be accorded the use of AWS after her signature on her paintings. Congratulations, Ann.

Peggy Stone announces that the tennis courts at the school have been completed. Parks and Rec is looking for a tennis instructor and attendant for the summer.

West Tisbury Emergency Management is looking for town residents interested in taking the Red Cross Shelter training class. Volunteers are needed to staff our shelter during emergencies, particularly hurricanes. Hurricane season begins June 1.The first class will be held May 21. Please call EM Director Judy Sibert at 774 563-0482.

Also looking for volunteers, the West Tisbury Library needs a new trustee. Hallie Mentzel has retired and the selectmen must appoint someone to serve the last year of Hallie’s term. If you are interested, please talk to Mary Jo Joiner at the library or Jen Rand at town hall. You must apply by June 1.

This Saturday, May 21, the library will be hosting a party to celebrate the opening of the new Children’s Room. The Friends of the Library took on this project to add space to the overcrowded Children’s Room. A staircase was added that opened into a basement room below, so that we now have a two-level space for children, books, and programs. Diana Manter of the Friends ran the project, which was totally funded by the Friends. Bill Wallace built the staircase and Linda Carnegie has painted a fanciful jungle up and down the stairs and around the walls of the new room. We all hope you will join us for cookies and lemonade on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm.

Don’t forget Ann Burt’s retirement party at the Ag Hall, Saturday evening at 5 pm.
