A tour of Menemsha on Sunday turned up no lingering sign of Bruce,
the shark, or his entourage. In fact, it was unusually quiet, with
few people out and about. Graduation ceremonies and parties were
probably the focus of many families.
Congratulations to all the graduates, especially Genevieve and Gwen
who made the top 20 list of students in their class. Gen is the
daughter of Joy and Steve Flanders, and Gwens parents are
Greg and Lois Mayhew. Genevieve will go to Hamilton College in Clinton,
N.Y., in the fall, while Gwen will attend Cedar Crest College in
Allentown, Pa. Good luck to both of you.
The family of Hank Scott, who died three years ago, invites
everyone to a show of Hanks paintings and stage drawings at
the Scott house, 195 South Road, Sunday, June 12 from 2 to 7 pm.
Paintings include oils and acrylics on canvas and paper and board,
Vineyard scenes from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Hank was the son of
Henry and Peggy Scott.
Jon Scott was in town before returning to his teaching in Vermont.
Marie has been here, planting at her Beetlebung Corner farm since
early April, and the first new green lettuces are coming up and
are available at the stand on Middle Road.
Good news: Principal Diane Gandy will be back at the Chilmark School
next year as principal again. Her calm and positive take on all
school issues was a boon during a challenging year.
Summer seems to be getting off to a slow start but Sundays
sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s brought out many swimmers,
beach walkers, and surf-casters. The latter worked valiantly to
remove all the bass and bluefish so the human swimmers could reclaim
the ocean. (Bruce, the shark, wasnt on the beach either.)
Bob Rosenbaum is having a show of his undersea photos at the Bank
of Marthas Vineyard (formerly Compass Bank), starting tomorrow,
June 9, until June 24. He is something of an authority on underwater
life in the Caribbean and has shot scenes of exotic sea creatures
in Costa Rica, Bonaire, and Little Cayman. This years show
includes photos from Dominica, which is a lush paradise
between Guadaloupe and Martinique with rain forests and waterfalls.
Photos from Dominica include a hawksbill turtle looking straight
into the camera and a sea urchin with a tiny shrimp, which is using
the sea urchin as protection. Everyone is invited to the opening
reception on Saturday, June 11 from 4 to 6 pm, at the bank.
As a result of the May mission night at the church, $800 was raised
to help drill a well to provide safe drinking water for residents
of Malawi, Africa.
Lia Kahler will be using the church for voice lessons every afternoon
during the summer. The Vineyard Sound will be making music at the
church Tuesday evenings, starting June 21. Come hear them.
Remember the special town meeting next at 7:30 pm on Monday, June
13 at the community center to give registered voters a chance to
vote on the Middle Line project.
