Solstice celebration

Worldwide the summer solstice is a time to celebrate light, growth, and the power of the sun. The magical landscape of The Polly Hill Arboretum is the perfect place to celebrate this natural cycle of the year on Saturday, June 18 from 3 to 7 pm.

Storyteller Lillian Kellman, Celtic guitarist Will Pfluger, the Vineyard Swordfish dancers, Spindrift Marionette Troupe, and a host of others will help us kick off summer on the Vineyard. Tours, food, and children’s crafts are also offered. Admission is free. Parking is at Martha’s Vineyard Ag Hall with shuttle service provided. For details call 508-693-9426 or visit Polly Hill on line at www.pollyhillarboretum.org.

Dream raffle

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services kicked off the first Possible Dreams raffle at the summer dinner dance on May 27. The winner of the raffle will choose between an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 2006 Mercedes Golf Tournament in Maui, Hawaii or $10,000 in cash. A maximum of 1,000 tickets will be sold at $100 each.

The raffle dream was donated by Marty Homlish a seasonal resident of Edgartown. The drawing will take place at the Possible Dreams Auction at the Harborside Inn on Monday, Aug. 1.

For information on the raffle or the auction, visit www.possibledreamsauction.org or call 508-693-7900 ext. 267 or ext. 374.

Learn to like lichens

This Saturday, from 9:30 am to 4 pm, Elizabeth Kneiper will teach you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about lichens. The workshop will take place at Polly Hill Arboretum.

After an introductory talk on biology and ecology, participants will go lichen hunting. Many of the most common bark-colonizing lichens at Polly Hill will be studied.

Ms. Kneiper teaches a lichen courses at the New England Wildflower Society and her enthusiasm for the frequently overlooked plant may be contagious.

For more information and to register for the workshop, call 508-693-9426.
