Edgartown
June 9, 2005

The Island was certainly wide awake this weekend, wasn’t it? I don’t know if it was all due to Jaws Fest or if it was the weather forecast or it was simply a fluke, but it seemed like people were everywhere! The weather was wonderful, with Sunday clearly being a “beach day” by anyone’s definition of the term. Summer does seem to be upon us — finally.

I haven’t heard any official results with regard to Jaws Fest, but it certainly did seem to be a popular event. The wonderful shark on Donaroma’s front yard always seemed to have someone in front of it, getting their picture taken for posterity and a number of locals were signing autographs in town on Saturday morning. I have to admit that my first impression was that this was a pretty silly event, particularly for Islanders. But it did prove to be fodder for discussions, trivia contests, and walks down memory lane for many Vineyard folk. Similar to the days when the original film crews were here, it was a little inconvenient but entertaining as well.

I owe the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group a big apology! They are hosting An Evening Under the Stars tonight, June 9, from 6 to 9 pm, at the Mediterranean Restaurant in Vineyard Haven. It will feature hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Dress is casual elegance and music will be provided by Jeremy Berlin. Admission price of $100 per person is tax deductible, and all proceeds go directly to aid Island cancer patients. If you are interested in attending, please call Jane Carroll at 696-9849. If space is still available tonight, tickets will also be available at the door.

I received word from the Edgartown Council on Aging on a few events happening this month. Today at 12:30 pm there is a presentation on reverse mortgage loans with Joe DeMarkey of The Bank of New York Mortgage Company. Please call the COA to see if space is still available for this event. Additionally, tomorrow morning at 9 am, Margaret Knight will talk about The Alexander Technique, a mind/body approach to changing movement habits that help you to be more steady on your feet and move more freely. The COA will also serve beverages ad desserts on Fridays at noon for anyone who wants to bring a bag lunch and enjoy lunch at their umbrella tables. And finally, anyone interested in celebrating their June birthday should call the COA and they will plan a birthday party, complete with lunch, cake, and flowers.

I ran into my predecessor, Sara Piazza, at the grocery store the other day. She has finished her studies for the semester and is looking forward to a little break. Congratulations, Sara!

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life begins tomorrow, June 10 at 3 pm at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School track. In this event, teams will walk continuously from 3 pm Friday until noon on Saturday to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Donations buy luminaries to honor or memorialize friends and loved one’s who have fought or continue to battle cancer. The luminarias will be lit late on Friday and the small lanterns, illuminating the track, are really something beautiful to see. It is a very inspiring event. If you have the chance to stop by to support the walkers and see things for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

Wagger, our 10-year old black-and-white cat, seems to be in one of his moods! Since I last wrote that he was missing, he has been returned to us, courtesy of a wonderful couple on S. Water Street. He has also disappeared and been recovered again since then. He always runs to the S. Water Street/Dunham Road area and has been doing this every fall and spring for the last few years. So, if over the months anyone notices a very friendly black-and-white kitty in that neighborhood, please call us and let us know. It’s probably him.

Please note that I will be sending in my column early next week, so if you have news to share, please get it to me by Saturday.

Have a great week!
