How fortunate we were that once again the weather cooperated and
provided such a beautiful day for the Marthas Vineyard Regional
High School graduation ceremonies on Sunday. The Tabernacle was
filled to overflowing with students, friends, and family all gathered
together to honor the graduates and there were so many of those.
They proudly marched in and were joyous in their exit. The feeling
I sensed was one of great support and love from this Island community.
What a wonderful feeling it must be to know that so many people
truly care about you.
Laura and Darren Garrity of Hingham are proud new parents of 9-pound,
11-ounce Michael OBrian Garrity who was born on June 3. Richard
Coutinho is the proud Island grandfather of this new grandson and
is visiting with his daughter Laura and her family for a few days.
And speaking of babies, I have a correction to last weeks
column. The mother of the twins I saw at the Memorial Day Parade
was not Kristen Tidmarsh but Kristen Gliga. My apologies to both
Kristens.
The winner of the name that boat contest for the Emergency
Managements new response boat was Jeremy Alley-Tarter, a third-grade
student at the Oak Bluffs School. Jeremy suggested the name, Red,
White and Blue. He now can invite two friends and his home
room teacher for a ride on the boat and lunch in Falmouth.
Marion Cardoza, one of the crossing guards for the Oak Bluffs School,
is retiring at the end of this school year, so when you see her
at her Norris Ave. station, be sure to thank her for guarding our
children these past years.
The school is planning a summer book swap. The lobby will be open
most weekdays until 2 pm and tables will be set up in the library
where books will be displayed. Please drop off any donations of
books in good condition to the school office.
Friday will be the string concert in the Oak Bluffs School Library
at 5:30 pm.
Laura Johnston, accompanied by her husband Bob, attended the Red
Sox game in Boston on June 4. This was a birthday present from her
husband.
Laura DeBettencourt and her children, Kelsey and Lucas, along with
Uncle Drew also traveled to Boston to see a Red Sox game. They went
on June 7, which was Lucass sixth birthday.
Mary-Ann Alwardt Romaine of Florence was named to the deans
list at Bay Path College in Longmeadow. Mary-Ann is the wife of
Lionel Romaine and has two daughters: 10-year old Alysha and Natalie
who is five. Along with all these responsibilities and school, Mary-Ann
also works for the Hampton Sheriffs Dept. She is the daughter
of Mary-Ann and Orland Alwardt of Oak Bluffs.
The Marthas Vineyard Regional High School students are planning
an appeal to raise funds to help prevent genocide in Darfur by organizing
a walk on Sunday, June 19. Look for more information regarding this
in next weeks column.
We send birthday smiles this week along to Hilde Combra on June11
and Mary-Ann Alwardt on June 13.
Dont forget to fly your flag on Flag Day Tuesday, June
14 and enjoy your week.
