Acting students shine

This weekend, Island Theatre Workshop’s Apprentice Players will perform two shows to end the spring session. Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, both days at 2 pm, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring Street in Vineyard Haven.

The students in grades 2 through 8 will perform fairy tales and scenes from George Bernard Shaw’s “Androcles and the Lion.” The students have been studying with Lee Fierro. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children.

This summer Ms. Fierro will continue bringing theater to children in a summer camp beginning on June 27. For more information call 508-693-5290.

David returns

Island favorite David Crohan will return for a concert on Sunday, June 12, at the Old Whaling Church at 4:30 pm. Joining Mr. Crohan will be Tom Billoto and Merrily Fenner, along with special guest Philip Crohan.

The concert will benefit the Community Solar Greenhouse. Tickets, $20, are available at the door.

Shanley play opens playhouse season

An explosive play, “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea,” by playwright John Patrick Shanley will open in previews on Wednesday, June 15, at the Vineyard Playhouse.

Shanley won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for his play “Doubt”; the play also won four Tony Awards last weekend.

“Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” explores the lives of Danny and Roberta, two tragic figures. Danny’s temper has earned him the nickname of the beast. Roberta is a single mother with a dreary future. The play contains strong language and adult themes.

“Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” continues Tuesday through Saturday, until July 2. For more information, visit www.vineyardplayhouse.org or call 508-696-6300.
