Congratulations to Freeman Leonard. He celebrated his 96th birthday
on May 29. His wife Connie said proudly that the guest list for this
momentous occasion included four generations. The family put on a
wonderful party at their home for 60 guests, mostly close relatives.
Freeman was happy that both their children were present. Their daughter
Cynthia and her husband John Schilling live here in town. Their son
Peter Leonard and wife Yolanda came from their home outside Rochester.
Freeman declared that, among other things, he is still able to balance
the checkbook. One of his presents was a book on ways to get to your
100th birthday. Id say he was well on his way.
This is a busy weekend coming up, full of lots of opportunities for
walking.
First on Friday, there is the Relay for Life to raise funds for the
American Cancer Society. Meet at the Marthas Vineyard Regional
High School track after 3 pm on Friday afternoon for a cook-out, camp-out,
and walk in relays through the night hours. A tribute to cancer survivors
will be held at 6 pm. The Rotary Club will also have a barbecue from
5 to 7. You are invited to come by at any time. Activities continue
through the night until the closing at noon on Saturday.
Keep on walking to the flea market at the Unitarian Universalist Church
on Saturday from 9 to 2, rain or shine. There are crafts for sale
as well as the assorted white elephants that have been collected for
a year. The church is at 238 Main Street.
Then on Sunday you can walk to the 2nd annual Vineyard Haven Library
Street Fair. Everyone is invited to Greenwood Avenue which will be
closed off for the fair from 1 to 4 pm. Meet Max Brusoff and enjoy
some of his photos. He has recently returned from a visit to Monaco
and Paris. He also has a collection of delightful Island scenes. There
will be books and other items for sale.
Jaws Fest started as a celebration aimed at off-Island fans but ended
up with a lot of support from Islanders. Whether it was appearing
on early morning TV or putting out Amity and shark-related items,
Islanders certainly took an active role in the celebration. Many Islanders
were among the moviegoers in Owen Park last week. They sat close together,
packed in to relish the thrills and frights of the movie Jaws.
The big question now is: Have you gone swimming yet?
Cool off and read a poem. A Poetry Reading Circle begins Monday at
the Tisbury Senior Center at 10 am. Anyone is welcome who loves poetry
and wants to examine poems in depth. Each month the group will read
and discuss one or two significant poems of a selected poet. The well-structured
meetings will last until 11:30. The June meeting will feature Billy
Collins. On Tuesday, July 5 the selected poems of Nobel Prize winner
Wislawa Szymborska will be featured. Remember, the senior center is
air-conditioned in hot weather.
Tuesday is Flag Day. Fly the flag to show your pride in your flag
and country.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Cody Chandler
and Ruth Stiller. Wish the best to Florence Koster on Saturday. Tuesday
belongs to Mary Mowery. Happy birthday to Frederick Nash on Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: Smile before you go to bed. You will sleep better.
