African crafts sale

This Sunday, July 3, Marsha Winsryg will host an African Crafts sale from 10 am until 5 pm at her home off New Lane in West Tisbury. Marsha, who dedicates much of her time to working on behalf of disabled and orphaned children in Zambia, will present an array of crafts featuring jewelry, carvings, baskets, and Chitenge printed wraps. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Mama Bakhita Home for Disabled Children in Livingstone, Zambia.

Follow signs from New Lane. For more information, contact Marsha at 508-693-4059.

Seeking a contemplative garden

On Wednesday, July 13 at 7:30 pm, the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury offers an illustrated talk entitled “Landscape as Spirit: Creating a Contemplative Garden.” Guests Martin Mosko and Alxe Noden discuss contemplative garden design, ideas of balance in composition, and ways to create magic in our environment.

Mr. Mosko, founder of Marpa & Associates landscape design firm in Boulder, Colo. is a Zen monk who studied painting and Sanskrit at Yale University and apprenticed with Japanese master gardeners. Writer/photographer Alxe Noden has studied Tibetan Buddhism and has worked with Marpa & Associates since 1993.

The pair co-authored “Landscape as Spirit: Creating a Contemplative Garden.” A book signing follows. Bring a flashlight!

$8/$5 for members. For information, call 508-693-9426

Donate for the animals

The MSPCA is looking for donations of all sorts from Island businesses for its annual Silent Auction to raise funds for the animals at the shelter. The event, set to take place later this summer, has become both a fun and successful fundraiser.

If you are a business owner and would like to donate a tax-deductible item or service, please call the MSPCA at 508-627-8662.
